Montana is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west; North Dakota and South Dakota to the east; Wyoming to the south; and by the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. It is the fourth-largest state by area, the seventh-least populous state, and the third-least densely populated state. The western half of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges, while the eastern half is characterized by western prairie terrain and badlands, with more mountain ranges found throughout the state. In all, 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains.
The Montana House of Representatives is, with the Montana Senate, one of the two houses of the Montana Legislature. Composed of 100 members, the House elects its leadership every two years.

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Max Baucus won re-election to a sixth term by a very wide margin, despite Republican nominee Senator John McCain narrowly defeating Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama in the presidential race. As of the 2021, this is the last time a Democrat was elected to the Class 2 Senate seat in Montana.
Scott Sales is an American politician of the Republican Party. He is a state senator in the Montana Senate and also serves as the president of that body. He previously served in the Montana House of Representatives, including a term as minority leader and as speaker of the House. Sales is the first person, to be elected by his peers, to serve as the presiding officer of both bodies of the Montana Legislature. Sales is from Douglas, Wyoming.
Michael R. Cooney is an American politician who served as the 36th Lieutenant Governor of Montana from 2016 to 2021. He previously served in the Montana House of Representatives (1977–1981), as the Secretary of State of Montana (1989–2001), in the Montana Senate (2003–2011), as the President of the Montana Senate (2007–2009) and ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Montana in 2000. Cooney was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Montana in the 2020 election, losing to Republican U.S. Representative Greg Gianforte.
