Mike Smith is the global president of Downtown Music Publishing, a division of Downtown Music Holdings. Prior to this move, Smith was Managing Director at Warner/Chappell Music UK, part of the global music publishing arm of Warner Music Group.

Early career

Mike Smith started as an A&R scout at MCA Publishing in 1988, where he signed Blur, Levitation and scouted the Smashing Pumpkins. He then moved to EMI Publishing in 1992, where he went on to sign acts, such as PJ Harvey, Elastica, Supergrass, Teenage Fan Club, Doves, Starsailor, the Beta Band, the Avalanches, Gorillaz, the White Stripes, the Libertines, the Scissor Sisters, Arcade Fire, and Arctic Monkeys, as well as resigning Blur and progressing to the position of Head of A&R. [1] He also worked with artists such as Robbie Williams, The Verve and Beth Orton.

Columbia Records

Mike moved to Columbia Records UK in 2006 to work as the Managing Director. [2] In his first year there he signed Mark Ronson and Calvin Harris. Other signings included the Ting Tings, MGMT, the Hugs, the Gossip, Glasvegas, Miike Snow, Magnetic Man, Miles Kane, Paul Epworth, Band of Horses, Katy B, The Vaccines and Ryan Adams. Acts he also looked after included Kings of Leon, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters, Matt Cardle, Ke$ha, Sleigh Bells, and Kasabian. [3]

Mercury Records

In April 2012, Mike left Columbia to take up the role of President of Music at Mercury Records where he oversaw the signings of Iggy Azalea, the Vamps (British band) and Slaves (UK band), as well as signing Duke Dumont and the Strypes. With the formation of Virgin / EMI Records in 2013, from the merger of Virgin Records and Mercury Records, he signed the Chemical Brothers, Libertines, Barns Courtney and Squeeze.

Warner/Chappell Music

In 2016, Mike left Virgin/EMI to take up the position of Managing Director at Warner/Chappell UK, the longest established major international music publishing company. Its diverse roster runs from Noël Coward and George Gershwin to Skepta and Stormzy. As well as reuniting with Damon Albarn, since joining the company he has overseen the signings of Liam Gallagher, [4] J Hus, Dave, Andy Partridge, Joe Strummer, the Manic Street Preachers and Celeste.

In November 2016 Mike was the inaugural recipient of the George Martin Award at the Music Business Worldwide A&R Awards. [5]

Downtown Music Publishing

In September 2020 Mike joined Downtown Music Publishing as Global President where he is responsible for a catalogue that includes =lJohn Lennon, Miles Davis, [[George Gershwin, the Wu-Tang-Clan and the 1975

Personal life

Since 2010, Mike has been a trustee of the charity, New Deal of The Mind, which works to encourage job creation within the creative industries.

Mike has been sketching the musicians he has spent his lifetime watching and in 2009, staged an exhibition of prints made from these drawings at Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester. This was followed up in 2011 with a comprehensive show of his paintings, light boxes and prints at Somerset House. A further exhibition of the work was staged at Metropolis Group studios. [3]

Parlophone Records Limited is a German–British record label founded in Germany in 1896 by the Carl Lindström Company as Parlophon. The British branch of the label was founded on 8 August 1923 as the Parlophone Company Limited, which developed a reputation in the 1920s as a jazz record label. It grew to be a worldwide success over time, with the success of platinum performers such as Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Devo, Tangerine Dream, Genesis, Phil Collins, the Human League, Culture Club, Simple Minds, Lenny Kravitz and Mike Oldfield among others, meaning that by the time it was sold, it was regarded as a major label, alongside other large international independents such as A&M and Island Records.

EMI British music recording and publishing company

EMI Group Limited was a British transnational conglomerate founded in March 1931 in London. At the time of its break-up in 2012, it was the fourth largest business group and record label conglomerate in the music industry, and was one of the "Big Four" record companies. Its labels included EMI Records, Parlophone, Virgin Records, and Capitol Records, which are now owned by other companies.

Oasis (band) English rock band

Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Developed from an earlier group, the Rain, the band originally consisted of Liam Gallagher, Paul Arthurs (guitar), Paul McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll (drums). Upon returning from working as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets, Liam's older brother Noel joined as a fifth member, finalising the band's core line-up. During the course of their existence, they had various line-up changes, though the Gallagher brothers remained as the staple members.

Vertigo Records British record label

Vertigo Records is a record company that originated in the United Kingdom. It was a subsidiary of the Philips/Phonogram record label, launched in 1969 to specialise in progressive rock and other non-mainstream musical styles. Today it is operated by Universal Music Germany, and the UK catalogue was folded into Mercury Records, which was absorbed in 2013 by Virgin EMI Records, which was renamed back to EMI Records in June 2020.

Because Music is an independent record label with headquarters in Paris and London. Because Music SAS is the main label, with Because Music Ltd handling the British artist roster.

Nick Raphael is a music industry executive and was born in London, England. He is currently President of Capitol Records in the UK. He got his first taste of the music industry in 1987, when he with school friends promoted a night at Dingwalls in Camden Lock, London. His most recent successes include 5 Seconds of Summer who became the first band to have their first three albums enter at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Paloma Faith who won the 2015 Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist, Liam Payne who currently has the biggest selling single from a member of One Directionand Sam Smith who won four 2015 Grammy Awards plus an Oscar and Golden Globe in 2016.In October 2018, Sam Smith surpassed 20 million global album sales.

Miles Leonard is a British music industry executive and is Chairman of Parlophone & Warner Bros. Records UK. He has previously worked for Virgin Records, EMI Records, Roadrunner Records and been credited as signing and breaking artists including Gorillaz, Coldplay, Tinie Tempah, The Verve and for reviving the career of Kylie Minogue.

Philharmania is an album produced, arranged and conducted by Mike Batt in 1998. Performers included the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and guest singers including Roger Daltrey, Marc Almond, Bonnie Tyler, Status Quo, Huey Lewis, Kim Wilde, Lemmy, Justin Hayward, and others. The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

Virgin EMI Records British record label

Virgin EMI Records was a British record label owned by the Universal Music Group that was formed in 2013. In June 2020, the label was rebranded as EMI Records, and operates Virgin Records as an imprint of the new EMI Records.

Sas Metcalfe is President, Global Creative, of Kobalt Music and has been at the company since it was founded in 2001. She is a British music executive, based in Los Angeles, who has worked her entire career in the music industry, for a number of music publishers and record labels signing artists such as Radiohead, Bjork, Snow Patrol, Alt-J, David Gray, Kelly Clarkson, Paul McCartney and Childish Gambino.
