In 1990, Tyson lost the titles to underdog Buster Douglas in one of the biggest upsets in history, when he was knocked out in the tenth round.

As an amateur, Mayweather won a bronze medal in the featherweight division at the 1996 Olympics, three U.S. Golden Gloves championships, and the U.S. national championship at featherweight.
In boxing, kickboxing or mixed martial arts, a tomato can, or simply tomato or can, is a fighter with poor or diminished skills who may be considered an easy opponent to defeat, or a "guaranteed win." Fights with tomato cans can be arranged to inflate the win total of a professional fighter. Similarly, a fighter whose record consists of wins over easy opponents is referred to as a "can crusher". The phrase originates in the childhood pastime of kicking a can down the street—a boxer is advancing his career with minimal effort by defeating a tomato can and notching a win. "Tomato" refers to blood: "knock a tomato can over, and red stuff spills out."

An exhibition fight is a contact sports non-profit event, usually a boxing fight in which participants fight, normally for three rounds. They may wear large gloves to minimize punch harm or impact on the combatants, headgear, and non-boxing related clothing. Many exhibition fights involve popular current or former world champions, and exhibition bouts are usually carried out for charity purposes or for the public's entertainment. The bout took place on June 1, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Joshua was originally scheduled to face undefeated WBA No. 2 and WBO No. 3 ranked heavyweight Jarrell Miller, who was replaced by Ruiz Jr. after Miller failed three drug tests. He was replaced by Ruiz, who was the WBA No. 5, WBO No. 11 and IBF No. 14 ranked heavyweight.

The bout was held at the Staples Center, Los Angeles on 9 November 2019, and was scheduled for six three minute rounds in the cruiserweight division, with both fighters making their professional boxing debuts. The result was a split decision victory for KSI, with two judges scoring the bout 56–55 and 57–54 in favour of KSI, and a third judge scoring the fight 56–55 in favour of Logan Paul.

With three former WBC champions acting as judges, the result was scored as a controversial split draw.
