Mikel Zalbide Elustondo (born 9 May 1951) is a Basque linguist and sociolinguist.
Zalbide was born in San Sebastián and studied engineering at the University of Navarra. From a young age,he worked in those areas where Basque needed to be developed.[ clarification needed ]
He has done extensive work in the planning of the corpus of Euskera.[ clarification needed ] In 1972,while still a student,he was one of the founders of Elhuyar Kultur Elkartea. In addition to creating the first technical-scientific journal in Euskera,he took part in the preparation of didactic material and launched studies on word formation. [1]
Since the creation of UZEI (Unibertsitate Zerbitzuetarako Euskal Institutua) in 1978,he has been technically responsible for the area of science and technology. He worked at UZEI,among other things,in the dictionaries of Physics,Chemistry,and Mathematics.[ clarification needed ] He also studied the formation of lexicon and taught courses on the subject.[ clarification needed ]He is also the author of the systematization work[ clarification needed ] carried out in UZEI around the writing and pronunciation of lexical loans. In 1979,Zalbide was one of the participants in the initiative to create a Basque University,a joint commission called Commission For the Planning of Basque University. He was a member of the Joint Commission created by the pre-autonomous entity Basque General Council and the University of Bilbao (later the University of the Basque Country). Within it was created a subcommittee on linguistic standardization,the working group Zalbide was responsible for.
Since 1981,he has worked in the Department of Education,Universities and Research of the Basque Government as head of the Euskera Service. [2] He retired in 2014. As head of the Basque Department of the Department of Education,he has taken part in the main projects developed by the Administration to fix the teaching of Euskera and the levels of knowledge of that language.
In the fields of pedagogy and education he has participated in the working groups for the implementation of various projects:the EIMA (Euskal Ikasmaterialgintza) program for the creation of didactic materials in Euskera (both textbooks for Primary Education and Secondary,as audiovisual material and software),and to ensure the quality of the language;the NOLEGA program and the ULIBARRI project,with the aim of reinforcing the use of Euskera in the school environment;and the Plan for Euskaldunizar,and the Educational Administration. It has also been committed to analyze the linguistic competencies of Models A,B,and D,draw conclusions and propose improvement measures.
He was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language - Euskaltzaindia in 1983. Before that,in 1976,he was a member of the institution's subcommittee on mathematics. [2] In the academy he has done important work in the fields of lexicology and lexicography:he has been a member of the Lexicography Commission and the Jargon Section. In both cases he has held the position of secretary for some years.
On the other hand,within the same Euskaltzaindia,[ clarification needed ] he has been responsible for management of the Commission for the Establishment of Lexical Criteria (LEF in its acronym in Euskera). Around this line of work the projects of fixation of the writing of the lexical loans,[ clarification needed ] the Basque General Dictionary and the EEBS project (Egungo Euskararen Bilketa Sistematikoa) were developed.
Since April 27,2006,he is an academic in number.[ clarification needed ] He read his address to San Sebastian on June 2,2007. [3]
He is currently working on the Joanes Etxeberri project (Euskararen Historia Soziala - EHS Euskera Social History). This project,created in 2007,is developed in the field of historical sociolinguistics,analyzing the social evolution of Euskera and languages that have been in contact with Basque through time. [4]
Basque is a language spoken by Basques and other residents of the Basque Country,a region that straddles the westernmost Pyrenees in adjacent parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. Basque is classified as a language isolate and the only language isolate in Europe. The Basques are indigenous to and primarily inhabit the Basque Country. The Basque language is spoken by 806,000 Basques in all territories. Of these,93.7% (756,000) are in the Spanish area of the Basque Country and the remaining 6.3% (50,000) are in the French portion.
Euskaltzaindia is the official academic language regulatory institution which watches over the Basque language. It conducts research,seeks to protect the language,and establishes standards of use. It is known in Spanish as La Real Academia de la Lengua Vasca and in French as Académie de la Langue Basque.
Biscayan,sometimes Bizkaian,is a dialect of the Basque language spoken mainly in Biscay,one of the provinces of the Basque Country of Spain.
Standard Basque is a standardised version of the Basque language,developed by the Basque Language Academy in the late 1960s,which nowadays is the most widely and commonly spoken Basque-language version throughout the Basque Country. Heavily based on the literary tradition of the central areas,it is the version of the language that is commonly used in education at all levels,from elementary school to university,on television and radio,and in the vast majority of all written production in Basque.
Augustin Chaho in French or Agosti Xaho in Basque was an important Romantic Basque writer. He was born in Tardets,Soule,French Basqueland on 10 October 1811 and died in Bayonne,Labourd 23 October 1858. He is considered a precursor of left-wing Basque patriotism.
Luis Aranberri,better known as “Amatiño”,is one of the media professionals that best represents the new school of journalism in the Basque language,or Euskara,which emerged around 1970 and which,in step with the creation of the Basque Country’s own institutions,was accompanied by the development and consolidation of a Basque news arena that was practically non-existent up to barely one generation ago.
Korrika is a biennial event in the Basque Country that creates awareness of AEK's adult Basque language curriculum and Basque language,and is also a fund raiser;AEK is an adult education organisation for the teaching of Basque language. It is one of the largest demonstrations gathering support for a language in the world,and the longest relay race worldwide,with 2,700 kilometres in 2024,running day and night without interruption for 11 days. The Korrika is celebrated beyond its fundraising goal,encouraging,supporting and spreading the Basque language itself.
Nikolas Ormaetxea,also known as Orixe was a Basque language writer.
JoséLuis Álvarez Enparantza,better known by his pseudonym Txillardegi,was a Basque linguist,politician,and writer. He was born and raised in the Basque Country,and although he did not learn the Basque language until the age of 17,he later came to be considered one of the most influential figures in Basque nationalism and culture in the second half of the 20th century. He was one of the founders of ETA,but in 1967 he left because he did not agree with its political line.
Salazarese is the Basque dialect of the Salazar Valley of Navarre,Spain.
Euskotren,formally known as Basque Railways,is a public railway company controlled by the Basque Government and officially established in 1982 to operate several 1,000 mm narrow gauge railways inside the autonomous community of the Basque Country,under the terms of the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country. Originally operating under the commercial brand ET/FV,it took control of the management and operations of the narrow gauge lines formerly operated by the railway company FEVE. The commercial brand eventually changed to Euskotren,as it remains today. Since 2006,the infrastructure on which the company runs its trains has been owned by Euskal Trenbide Sarea.
Koldo Zuazo is a Basque linguist,professor at the University of the Basque Country and specialist in Basque language dialectology and sociolinguistics.
Joxe Azurmendi Otaegi is a Basque writer,philosopher,essayist,and poet. He has published numerous articles and books on ethics,politics,the philosophy of language,technique,Basque literature and philosophy in general.
Alavese is an extinct dialect of the Basque language spoken formerly in Álava,one of the provinces of the Basque Country of Spain. The modern-day communities of Aramaio and Legutio along the northern border with Biscay do not speak the Alavese dialect but a variant of the Biscayan dialect instead and while overall some 25% of people in Álava today are Basque speakers,the majority of these are speakers of Standard Basque who acquired Basque via the education system or moved there from other parts of the Basque Country.
Araba Euskaraz is the festivity that ikastola-s of Álava celebrate. The Ikastola-s' Association organizes it annually in mid-June,and it was first organized in 1981 in Vitoria,capital of Álava.
