Milan Rai (born 1984) [1] is a Nepalese contemporary visual artist, based in Kathmandu. Rai is most notable for his white butterfly project, which has been employed across the globe. The white butterflies have come to represent values such as hope, peace and harmony. Due to his work, he is often referred to as the "Butterfly Man". [2] [3] [4] Rai has since averted his focus to increasing urban greenery in Kathmandu. [5]
Rai has stated before that he was never really interested in conventional education. [6] As a result, he dropped out of high school at the age of fourteen after having changed schools multiple times. Rai then requited to his childhood passion which is to paint. Shortly afterwards, he entered an art competition after seeing an advertisement poster in his local art shop, which to his surprise, Rai won. [6] He then started exhibiting his artworks in art galleries. After initial commercial success, Rai questioned the integrity and motivation behind his work. [6] This led Rai to abstaining from exhibitions in Nepalese art galleries. [6] In order to make art more accessible to the general public in Kathmandu, Rai started placing white paper cut butterflies in public spaces in the city. [7] Rai's white butterflies have been utilised in 40 different countries for various reasons. [8] [9] For this, he received the Harvard University (SAI) Visiting Artist Award (2016). [10] Rai is now primarily focused on landscape architecture in the Kathmandu valley. [11]
Rai is also known for his humanitarian work in Nepal. During the May 2015 Nepal earthquake, with the help from fifty volunteers, the Nepalese army and using funds from well-wishers, Rai and his team constructed 120 toilets in Kathmandu. [12] [13] [14]
Kathmandu, officially Kathmandu Metropolitan City, is the capital and most populous city of Nepal with 845,767 inhabitants living in 105,649 households as of the 2021 Nepal census and approximately 4 million people in its urban agglomeration. It is located in the Kathmandu Valley, a large valley in the high plateaus in central Nepal, at an altitude of 1,400 metres.
Music of Nepal refers to the various musical genres played and listened to in Nepal. With more than fifty ethnic groups in Nepal, the country's music is highly diverse. Genres like Tamang Selo, Chyabrung, Dohori, Adhunik Geet, Bhajan, Filmi music, Ghazal, Classical music, songs and Ratna music are widely played and popular, but many other less common genres are yet to be cataloged. Western musical genres like Rock, Metal, Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B also regularly feature on the Nepalese music charts. Most of the country's musical bands are based in the Kathmandu valley. Musical genres from Tibet and India have greatly influenced Nepalese music.
Bhaktapur, known locally as Khwopa and historically called Bhadgaon, is a city in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal located about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from the capital city, Kathmandu. Bhaktapur is the smallest city of Nepal as well as the most densely populated. Along with Kathmandu and Lalitpur, Bhaktapur is one of the three main cities of the Kathmandu Valley and is a major Newar settlement of the country. The city is also known for its Newar tradition, cuisine and artisans. Bhaktapur suffered heavy damage in the April 2015 earthquake.
Mahananda Sapkota (1896–1977) was a Nepalese social worker, etymologist, linguist, and poet. He received several national awards for his contributions to poetry. His social work focused on education and social awareness particularly in eastern Nepal. A statue of him stands in Inaruwa of Sunsari District.
Chitrakar is a caste within the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The Newar caste system is divided according to profession. Accordingly, Chitrakars were painters and mask makers.

Lain Singh Bangdel / Lain Bangdel (Rai), was Nepal's foremost artist, novelist, and art historian. In addition to being a leading authority on Nepalese art, Bangdel is best known as the "father of modern art" and was responsible for introducing the modern trends of Western art into Nepal with his pioneering one-man exhibition in Kathmandu in 1962.
Manjushree Thapa is a Nepalese–born Canadian essayist, fiction writer, translator and editor. She is one of the first English writers of Nepali descent to be published internationally. Forget Kathmandu and The Tutor of History are some of her most well-known works.
Yuyutsu Ram Dass Sharma is a Nepalese-Indian poet and journalist. He was born at Nakodar, Punjab and moved to Nepal at an early age. He writes in English and Nepali.
Dayahang Rai is a Nepalese actor, director, and playwright. Dayahang is known for his uniqueness in Nepali cinema. He is one of the most popular and acclaimed actors of Nepal. He has starred in over 40 films and is one of the leading contemporary actors of Nepal. He has received various accolades throughout his acting career. Dayahang is a veteran theatrical actor who made the jump to Nepali cinemas.
Bibeksheel Nepali Dal is a political party in Nepal. The name "Bibeksheel" translates to "common sense wisdom".
Sunil Pokharel is a Nepalese theatre artist and director. He is considered one of the pioneers of modern Nepali theatre. He is a graduate of National School of Drama, India (1987). He has directed more than four dozens of varied Nepali, Indian and European plays.
Nepal Literature Festival is an annual international literary festival which takes place in Pokhara, Nepal. It was founded in 2011 by Bookworm Foundation, a not-for-profit organization.
Shrinkhala Khatiwada is a Nepalese model and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Nepal World 2018. She represented Nepal in Miss World 2018. She also became the second Nepali after Ishani Shrestha to win Beauty with a Purpose Award. She was in the Top 12 of Miss World 2018.
The Voice of Nepal is a Nepalese reality show and the Nepalese format of the international TV singing reality series called The Voice. The show usually has four different coaches (judges), who eventually form four different teams after the selection event called the Blind Audition. Each team has to go through the battle round where contestants are paired with one another within the same team and only half of the total selected contestants from the blind audition are selected for the knockout round. During the knockout round, based on The Voice format, only the best and strongest contestants who their respective coach consider the best overall are selected by their coaches. They also have the sole right to do this on his or her own and take them to the live round. During the live round event, through a series of voting episodes, only one contestant with the most popular vote will advance to the grand finale. The first season of the voice of Nepal was won by CD Vijaya Adhikari from Team Deep, season 2 was won by Ram Limbu from Team Pramod and season 3 was won by Kiran Gajmer from Team Pramod. The Grand Finale of season 1 was held on 14 December 2018 in Quatar stadium, the second season's Grand finale was held at Taragaon Open Field Chuchchepati Kathmandu on 7 December 2019 and the third season's Grand Finale was held in The Voice Studio, Dhumbarahi. The voice of Nepal was bought by Himalaya Television.
Photo Kathmandu is a biennial international photography festival held in Patan, Nepal, and organised by photo.circle, a Kathmandu based cultural organisation, and Shikshya Foundation Nepal.
Professor Jaya Raj Acharya is a former ambassador of Nepal to the United Nations from 1991 to 1994, a scholar, author and lecturer at Tribhuvan University. He is a prominent foreign policy expert especially in Nepal's relations with India and China. He's raised awareness of Nepal's education, state of Nepali politics etc. in international forums. He's done numerous TV appearances in the Nepali Media. During his tenure at the United Nations, Acharya was the chairperson of the UN’s anti-apartheid committee.
Aarohan Theatre Group is a theatre group in Nepal. It produces shows incorporating various cultures, religions and rituals of Nepal. The group has produced 15 TV shows for Nepal Television and produced various radio dramas. One of the radio drama was 136 episodes long. The group has performed its plays in India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Norway, Denmark and United States. It has two theater halls in its Biratnagar premise.
Uma is a 2013 Nepali drama film directed by Tsering Rhitar Sherpa. It stars Reecha Sharma, Saugat Malla, Mithila Sharma in the lead roles, alongside Dayahang Rai and Nischal Basnet. The film is about the Nepalese Civil War.
The Statue of Lakshmi-Narayana is a historic Vaikuntha Kamalaja murti (statue) that composites the androgynous form of the Hindu god Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi. The statue dates back to the 10th to 15th century and it was originally located in Patan, Nepal. The statue had been worshipped for 800 years until it was stolen in 1984 and ended up at the Dallas Museum of Art in the United States, before being returned to Nepal 37 years later on 5 March 2021. On December 5, 2021 statue is reinstated in Narayan temple, Patan lalitpur
