Hlonitshwa Mildred Mpaka (born 20 December 1966) [1] is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2005. She resigned from her seat during the Travelgate scandal, in which she was convicted of having defrauded Parliament.
Mpaka joined the National Assembly on 10 August 1999, filling the casual vacancy created by Janet Love's resignation. [2] She was elected to a full term in the seat in the 2004 general election. [1]
In March 2005, Mpaka was among the first MPs convicted on a criminal charge for abusing parliamentary travel vouchers in the Travelgate scandal. [3] She accepted a plea deal with the Scorpions, in terms of which she pled guilty to defrauding Parliament of service benefits worth R75,000. She was sentenced to pay a fine of R80,000 or serve two years' imprisonment, in addition to a mandatory five-year suspended prison sentence. [3]
In June 2005, Mpaka and four other convicted MPs – Ruth Bhengu, Mavis Magazi, Rhoda Joemat, and Pamela Mnandi – announced that they would resign from the National Assembly. [4] Mpaka left her seat on 1 August 2005. [5]
Rhoda Joemat was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 until 2005, when she was convicted of defrauding Parliament during the Travelgate scandal. A former anti-apartheid activist, she also served as Provincial Treasurer of the ANC's Western Cape branch from 1998 to 2001.
Travelgate was one of the first major political corruption scandals in post-apartheid South Africa. It implicated over 30 Members of Parliament (MPs) as accomplices and beneficiaries in a large-scale fraud scheme, under which Parliament unknowingly recompensed MPs and private travel agencies for millions of rands in fictitious travel expenses. The Sunday Times broke the story in July 2004.

Since leaving the assembly in November 2004, he has worked in local public administration. In 2006, he was convicted of stealing from Parliament in the Travelgate scandal.
Lewele John Modisenyane is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009, serving the Free State constituency. He lost his seat in the 2009 general election, in which he defected from the ANC to the opposition Congress of the People (COPE). Mavis Nontsikelelo Magazi was a South African politician. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 until 2005, when she resigned after being convicted of defrauding Parliament in the Travelgate scandal. She returned to the assembly from 2009 until her death in 2011. She was also active in the ANC Women's League and South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) in Gauteng.
