Carmen Milena Mayorga is a Salvadoran diplomat,politician,journalist,and former model. Since December 1,2020,she has served as Salvadoran Ambassador to the United States of America,having been appointed by president Nayib Bukele. She was previously a member of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador for the San Salvador department from 2018 to 2020.
Mayorga is a retired model and beauty pageant contestant who represented El Salvador in Miss Universe 1996,where she finished in the top ten. Prior to entering politics,she was a journalist and news presenter. [1] She was formerly a member of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) until renouncing her membership in 2020.
Mayorga was born in San Salvador to a doctor and a Venezuelan mother. After graduating high school,Mayorga became a model for Willie Maldonado in the longest-running TV show in El Salvador,Fin de Semana. [2]
Mayorga won Miss El Salvador 1996,and competed at Miss Universe 1996,reaching the Top 10,being the 4th Salvadorian woman to be in the top at Miss Universe,and being the last Salvadoran to make the top for Miss Universe until Isabella García-Manzo managed to enter the Top 10 of Miss Universe 2023. Mayorga became the first Central American to have a Back To Back classification at Miss Universe.
After Miss Universe,Mayorga went on to be a news presenter for Teledos of the Telecorporación Salvadoreña from 1999 to 2005. In June 2005,she joined rival channel Canal 12 and became part of a new group of presenters on El Salvador's longest running morning show,Hola El Salvador. In 2011,Mayorga became conductor of her own talk show,Milena tu amiga on Canal 12. [3]
Mayorga was elected to the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador for the San Salvador department in 2018 as a member of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA). However,on June 4,2020,she renounced her party membership,accusing the party's leadership of corruption.
As a legislator,in relation to corruption,Mayorga supported the creation of the Permanent Commission against Corruption,the creation of the International Commission against Impunity in El Salvador,and a law for the repatriation of stolen or evaded capital.
In 2020,she voted in favor of all the proposals by the government of Nayib Bukele in terms of loans,fiscal measures,and health measures related to COVID-19. [4]
She became the Ambassador to The United States on December 1,2020. [5] In regard to foreign relations,she supported the creation of a special commission to monitor the situation of Salvadorans residing in the United States before the termination of Temporary Protected Status,a law for the exercise of the vote from abroad in the 2021 Salvadoran legislative election,reform of the migration and immigration legislation,and ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Politics of El Salvador takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the President of El Salvador is both head of state and head of government,and of an executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Legislative Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. El Salvador was ranked 5th least electoral democratic country in Latin America and the Caribbean according to V-Dem Democracy indices in 2023 with a score of 0.378 out of 1.

It was founded on 30 September 1981 by retired Salvadoran Army Major Roberto D'Aubuisson. The 2020 Salvadoran political crisis,commonly referred to in El Salvador as the numeronym 9F or El Bukelazo,was an incident in El Salvador on 9 February 2020. During the political crisis,Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele sent 40 soldiers of the Salvadoran Army into the Legislative Assembly building in an effort to coerce politicians to approve a loan request of 109 million dollars from the United States for Bukele's security plan for the country.

The 2021 Salvadoran political crisis occurred on 1 May 2021 when the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador voted to remove several judges from the Supreme Court and remove the Attorney General of El Salvador,both of which had been vocal opponents to the presidency of Nayib Bukele. The event has been referred to as a self-coup by the opposition and by news media outlets due to the action itself but also because of the 2020 Salvadoran political crisis in the year prior,where Bukele ordered soldiers into the Legislative Assembly,which has also been characterized as a self-coup.

The Airport of the Pacific is a planned joint-use civilian international airport and military base that will be located in Conchagua,El Salvador. It will serve the city of La Unión and the planned Bitcoin City. The airport was proposed by Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele during his 2019 presidential campaign as a part of his Cuscatlán Plan and construction was approved by the Legislative Assembly on 26 April 2022. Preliminary terraforming began in March 2023 and construction is planned to begin in early 2025.
Juan Manuel de Jesús Flores Cornejo,nicknamed "El Chino",is a Salvadoran politician who has served as the secretary-general of the Farabundo MartíNational Liberation Front (FMLN) since 2024. Flores served as the mayor of Quezaltepeque from 2003 to 2012 and then later as a deputy of the Legislative Assembly from La Libertad from 2012 to 2021. He was the presidential candidate for the FMLN in the 2024 general election with running mate was Werner Marroquín. He lost in a landslide to incumbent President Nayib Bukele,accumulating only 6.40 percent of the vote. Flores supports El Salvador further strengthening relations with the People's Republic of China.
Karim Alberto Bukele Ortez is a Salvadoran businessman and politician. He is a younger brother of and was a presidential advisor to Nayib Bukele,the current president of El Salvador. Bukele has previously worked as Nayib's campaign manager during his 2015 and 2019 electoral campaigns as well as the campaign manager for the Nuevas Ideas political party in 2021. In late-2023,Bukele was considered a likely candidate to succeed Nayib as acting president in the event that he resigned ahead of the 2024 general election,however,Bukele denied that he would succeed Nayib.
