History

In May 1992, in accordance with the proposal of the Chief of the General Staff, the Military Music Department of the General Staff was founded. It was formed in the basis of the Headquarters Military Band of the Kyiv Military District, which at that time was the top military band in the Ukrainian SSR, part of the larger massed bands of the Kyiv Garrison, and one of the best in the Soviet Union. The MMD was also raised on the basis of existing Soviet Armed Forces military bands within Ukrainian territory, such as the HQ Band of the Carpathian Military District. [1] Since January 2015, a total of 41 bands are currently active within the MMD.

Activities

The MMD-GSAFU accompanies activities carried out by the President of Ukraine, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, and the Chief of the General Staff. It is also responsible for the accompaniment of activities carryed out by the regional garrisons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The military bands of the department are regular participants in the Kyiv Independence Day Parade, as well as participants in many military tattoo festivals and concerts in Ukraine and abroad. The military band department organizes the leadership of its bands, as well as oversees the training of musicians by the Military Music Centers of the different branches of the armed forces. [2]

In 2016, 20 musicians from the Band of the 44th Artillery Brigade broke a record by performing the Shche ne vmerla Ukraina nearly 300 metres underground in a salt mine. [3]

The National Exemplary Band, as the foremost military band, is the largest in the armed forces, employing over 100 musicians. There are some limits to the number of musicians in each band, with the music centers of each armed service branch employing 52 members, and academic bands employing 21 members.

Russian military bands fall under the jurisdiction of the Military Band Service of the Armed Forces of Russia, which is the official music service for the Russian Armed Forces, and led by the Senior Director of Music, a billet of an officer with the rank of a Colonel or a general officer. There are currently between 200 and 300 military bands in the Russian Armed Forces that span across the military as well as all uniformed services in the country. Unlike most western nations, the Armed Forces does not maintain any bands composed of volunteering civilian musicians, as all bands, active or reserve, are manned by graduates of the military music training centers stationed anywhere in the country, as well as of civilian conservatories. While choirs may be attached to military bands, individual staff choirs do not exist in the Russian Armed Forces, since they have attached instrumental ensembles or orchestras. As of 2009, all military musicians are paid around 13,000 rubles ($169.65) for their service in the Armed Forces and other uniformed organizations.

National Exemplary Band of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The National Exemplary Band of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a 100-member military brass band of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It serves under the direct administration of the Military Music Department of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It was founded in December 1945 on the basis of the Band of the Kyiv Military District with Major Demyan Litnovsky acting as its first director. The band director is a s senior musical leader in the Ukrainian military. The band currently gives performances for Ukrainian radio and television, documentaries and films, as well as for musical events. The band's activities have been repeatedly recognized by the military leadership. In December 1965, for the merits in the development of musical art in the Kyiv Military District, the title of "Honored Orchestra of the Ukrainian SSR" was conferred upon it. The band has repeatedly won prizes Soviet Army competitions including the Grand Prix at the International Festival of Brass Music in Yugoslavia and in October 1983, when the band was honored with the title of Friendship Festival winner in East Germany.

Volodymyr Dashkovsky Ukrainian military musician/director (born 1965)

Colonel Volodymyr Anatolievich Dashkovsky also known as Vladimir Dashkovsky is a Ukrainian military conductor and composer who serves as the Senior Military Director of the Military Music Department of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (MMD-GSAFU) based in Kyiv.

Major General Volodymyr Fedorovych Derkach is a retired Ukrainian musician who worked for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. His last post he served in was as the Senior Military Director of the Military Music Department of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (MMD-GSAFU). He also served concurrently as the director of the National Exemplary Band of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
