Minami Yoda

Minami Yoda is an American mechanical engineer and the chairperson of mechanical engineering at Michigan State University [1] . Her research concerns experimental fluid dynamics, [2] with applications ranging from fusion power to nanofluidics, and including the measurement of fluid flows using the evanescent field. [3]

Education and career

Yoda graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1985, and completed her Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1989. [2] Her dissertation, The instantaneous concentration field in the self-similar region of a high Schmidt number round jet, was supervised by Lambertus Hesselink. [4]

After postdoctoral research at Technische Universität Berlin, she joined the Georgia Tech faculty in 1995. [2] At Georgia Tech, she was the principal investigator of the Fluids, Optical and Interfacial Diagnostics Lab. [5] She served as chair of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics for 2019–2020. [6]

Recognition

Yoda was named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2008. [2] She became a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2012, after being nominated by the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics, "for outstanding contributions to experimental fluid dynamics and optical diagnostics and, specifically, for innovative contributions to the development of evanescent-wave illumination techniques to study flows in near-wall regions". [3]

He has been the first in the history of IIT Kharagpur to be bestowed by the National Award for Teachers in the Higher Education Category by the honourable President of India. He is also Institute Chair Professor Awardee of 2023. He has served as the Dean, Research and Development, Associate Dean and the Head of the School of Medical Science and Technology of the Institute. He has also been National Academy of Engineering Chair Professor. He joined the Institute in 2002 as Assistant Professor and has been a Full Professor since 2008.

Yuriko Yamamuro Renardy is a Japanese–American expert in fluid dynamics who works as a Class Of 1950 Endowed Professor of Mathematics at Virginia Tech.

John Francis Brady is an American chemical engineer and the Chevron Professor of Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He is a fluid mechanician and creator of the Stokesian dynamics method for simulating suspensions of spheres and ellipsoids in low Reynolds number flows. He is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society, a fellow of the Society of Rheology, as well as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Howard Brenner was a professor emeritus of chemical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research profoundly influenced the field of fluid dynamics, and his research contribution to fundamental principles of fluid dynamics has been deeply honored. His first textbook, Low Reynolds Number Hydrodynamics, earned him a reputation lasting several decades. His profession though fundamental research is on microfluidics, complex liquids, interfacial transport process, emulsion rheology, and multiphase flows.

Monika Schleier-Smith is an American experimental physicist studying many-body quantum physics by precisely assembling systems of ultracold atoms. Her research helps connect the world of theoretical and experimental physics. These atomic, molecular, and optical physics (AMO) engineered systems have applications in quantum sensing, coherent control, and quantum computing. Schleier-Smith is an associate professor of physics at Stanford University, a Sloan Research Fellow, and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award recipient. Schleier-Smith also serves on the board of directors for the Hertz Foundation and also works to improve education through speaking and serving on panels.

Fotis Sotiropoulos is a Greek-born American engineering professor and university administrator known for his research contributions in computational fluid dynamics for river hydrodynamics, renewable energy, biomedical and biological applications. He currently serves as the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of Virginia Commonwealth University, a position he has held since August 1, 2021

Lambertus Hesselink is a Professor in the Stanford Department of Electrical Engineering. He was the Director of the Ginzton Lab from 2008 until 2014. His research includes nano-photonics, ultra high density optical data storage, nonlinear optics, optical super-resolution, materials science, three-dimensional image processing and graphics, and Internet technologies.

Leslie Morgan Smith is an American applied mathematician, mechanical engineer, and engineering physicist whose research focuses on fluid dynamics and turbulence. She is a professor of mathematics and of engineering physics at the University of Wisconsin.

Vivian "Vob" O'Brien was an American applied mathematician and physicist whose research included fluid dynamics and visual perception. She worked for many years as a researcher at Johns Hopkins University, and is the namesake of the Craik–O'Brien–Cornsweet illusion.

Karen Ashby Flack is an American mechanical engineer specializing in experimental fluid dynamics. She is a professor of mechanical engineering at the United States Naval Academy.

Beverley J. McKeon is a physicist and aerospace engineer specializing in fluid dynamics, and in particular in turbulent flows near walls. She was Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology. Currently she is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University.

Snezhana I. Abarzhi is an applied mathematician and theoretical physicist specializing in the dynamics of fluids and plasmas and their applications in nature and technology. She is a professor of chemical engineering and associate dean for faculty and graduate affairs and strategic initiatives in the Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering.

Hope A. Michelsen is an American physical chemist and combustion scientist whose research involves the byproducts of combustion including soot, black carbon, greenhouse gases, the contribution of these substances to global warming, and the use of laser-induced incandescence to measure combustion products. She is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, in the Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering.
