The Ministry of Science and Technology (Myanmar) was organized under the Ministry of Education (Myanmar) as the Ministry of Education (Science and Technology) ( Burmese : ပညာရေးဝန်ကြီးဌာန (သိပ္ပံနှင့်နည်းပညာ),abbreviated MOE-ST) in April 2016 by U Htin Kyaw's Government. The current responsible minister is Myo Thein Gyi.

The Ministry of Science and Technology administers Burma's science and technology research and development affairs. MOST was established on 2 October 1996 under Order No. 30/96.

Burmese language language spoken in Myanmar

The Burmese language is the Sino-Tibetan language spoken in Myanmar where it is an official language and the language of the Bamar people, the country's principal ethnic group. Although the Constitution of Myanmar officially recognizes the English name of the language as the Myanmar language, most English speakers continue to refer to the language as Burmese, after Burma, the older name for Myanmar. In 2007, it was spoken as a first language by 33 million, primarily the Bamar (Burman) people and related ethnic groups, and as a second language by 10 million, particularly ethnic minorities in Myanmar and neighboring countries.

The educational system of Myanmar is operated by the government Ministry of Education. Universities and professional institutes from upper Burma and lower Burma are run by two separate entities, the Departments of Higher Education, whose office headquarters are in Yangon and Mandalay respectively. The education system is based on the United Kingdom's system, due to nearly a century of British and Christian presences in Burma. "The first Government high school was founded by the British colonial administration in 1874. Two years later, this Government High School was upgraded and became University College, Rangoon." Full-time bachelor's degrees were not offered at the university's main campus after the student protests of 1996. The bachelor's degree was re-offered from 2014 on, to the best students in the country. Today degrees in Political Science are offered to undergraduate students, as well as Postgraduate diplomas in areas such as social work and geology.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, formerly Ministry of Education, is responsible for the development of human resources in India. The Ministry is divided into two departments: the Department of School Education and Literacy, which deals with primary, secondary and higher secondary education, adult education and literacy, and the Department of Higher Education, which deals with university education, technical education, scholarship etc. The erstwhile Ministry of Education now functions under these two departments, as of 26 September 1985.

The institute also offers four-year bachelor's degrees and post-graduate diplomas in select fields.

The University of Medical Technology, Yangon is one of three universities of medical technology in Myanmar. The university offers four-year Bachelor of Medical Technology (B.Med.Tech) and two-year Master of Medical Technology (M.Med.Tech) degree programs in physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology and medical imaging technology. The university accepts approximately undergraduate 150 students annually. It is situated at Lower Mingaladon Road in Insein Township.

The University of Community Health, Magway (UCH) is a public health university under the Ministry of Health and Sports (Myanmar), and located in Magway, Myanmar. The university offers a four-year Bachelor of Community Health (B.Comm.H) degree program. They have to study how to do public health but they must take clinical subjects for rural population whom can't get primary health care. Formally, the graduates are allowed to practice as Health Assistants (HA) in Department of Public Health of Myanmar, many of whom are the main providers of primary health care in rural Myanmar where access to regular physicians is difficult.

Higher education in Myanmar

Higher education in Myanmar has experienced a large expansion since 1988, although ranks as one of the lowest globally for universities. Due to the student protests in the 8888 uprising, the Myanmar government closed down universities for two years. Additional student protests in 1996 and 1998 caused universities to be closed for another 3 years.
