Justice Mir Hasmat Ali is a retired Justice of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Career

Ali and 18 other judges filed an application with the Supreme Court against a High Court Verdict which ordered the government to restore 10 additional judges of the High Court Division to the court with seniority whose appointments were not confirmed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led government. [1] The 10 additional judges were appointed to the court by the Awami League government. [1] Ali and 17 other judges opposing the verdict were appointed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government. [1]

Ali and Justice Shamim Hasnain declared the Voluntary Disclosure of Information Ordinance-2008 which created the Truth and Accountability Commission illegal in November 2008. [2] The Truth and Accountability Commission was established on 30 July 2008 by the Fakhruddin Ahmed led Caretaker Government to increase the speed of corruption cases. [3] [4] [5] The Caretaker Government had arrested numerous politicians including former Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia on corruption charges. [6] The commission was made up of a former Judge of Bangladesh Supreme Court Justice Habibur Rahman Khan, retired Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Asif Ali, and a retired Major General Manzur Rashid Chowdhury from Bangladesh Army. [6] [7] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina disclosed the names of 456 people who had confessed to the commission in April 2009. [8]

Ali and Justice Shamim Hasnain granted bail to HBM Iqbal, Awami League member of parliament, in January 2009. [9] In January 2009, Ali and Justice Shamim Hasnain declared illegal rules of the University of Dhaka that prevented Madrassah students for admission to seven departments of the university. Hawa Bhaban is the political office of the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and monitors party affairs on the chair's behalf. It was viewed as an "alternate power house" in Bangladesh when BNP was in power from 2001 to 2006. It became controversial during the 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis when the party joint secretary was Tarique Rahman, son and heir apparent of the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Khaleda Zia. Some government officials maintained regular contact with viya (Tareq) to manipulate administrative matters such as promotion, posting, appointment etc. in different ministries and divisions. This resulted in a parallel government being administered from Hawa Bhaban.

The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated.

Justice Mohammad Fazlul Haque was a Bangladeshi High Court judge who served as the chief adviser of the non-partisan caretaker government of Bangladesh for one day in January 2007.

Ruhul Quddus Talukder "Dulu" is a Bangladeshi politician, lawyer, former deputy minister, and member of parliament representing the Natore-2 constituency. He is the organising secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Dulu was born in Natore Sadar Upazila, Natore District. He was a regular practitioner lawyer. Along with his legal career, he was also active in politics. In 1977, he joined the BNP's student organisation, Chhatra Dal.
