Miriam Odinchezo Iruaku Ikejiani-Clark (1949 - 2011) was a Nigerian Professor of Political Science at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State, who also served as minister of state for the Federal Capital Territory.

Early life and education

She was born at the University College Ibadan to late Okechukwu Ikejiani and late Mrs. Miriam Margery Carter Ikejiani on July 8, 1949. [1] She earned a B.A. in political history from Eastern Mennonite University in 1969, and then received her M.A. degree in political science from Howard University in 1971. [2] She did post-graduate studies at Catholic University in Washington DC with a graduate fellowship in politics. [1]

Career

Ikejiani-Clark was the first woman professor of political science at the University of Nigeria, [3] and from 1997 to 1999 she was the head of the department of political science. [4] She also served as the dean (2007 until 2009). [1] [5] From 2002 until 2004 she was the editor of the Nigerian Journal of Social Sciences. [1]

In 2019, a memorial lecture in Ikejiani-Clark's honor was established at the University of Nigeria, and Governor Samuel Ortom gave the inaugural lecture. [6] [5]

Political career

Ikejiani-Clark from 1992 to 1993 served as the Chairman Social Democratic Party (SDP) Anambra State and led the Anambra state Delegation to the National SDP Convention in Jos in 1994. She equally served as a member of the National Constitutional Conference, Commission. Between March 1995 to November 1997 [5] Ikejiani-Clark served as minister of state for the Federal Capital Territory, the first woman to serve in this position. [7] She focused on improving conditions for the poor. [8] In 2008, late President Musa Yar'dua appointed her as a member of the presidential committee on honours & awards. [1] [ better source needed ] In 2009 she spoke on an electoral act in Nigeria, which she felt allowed politicians to manipulate the period they spent in office. [3]

Personal life

Ikejiani-Clark died at the National Hospital, Abuja on September 22, 2011. [9] She was married to Chuba Okadigbo and they had four children before getting divorced. [10]

He was the fourth Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife from January 1979 to December 1982 and the former President/Vice Chancellor of the Anambra State University of Technology, Enugu, Nigeria, from January 1983 to December 1986. He delivered the Ahiajoku lecture on 20 November 2000. He was the first Nigerian geophysicist and the second president of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He was elected as president of the Academy in 1979 to succeed Professor Victor Adenuga Oyenuga, the first emeritus professor of the University of Ibadan and the first African professor of Agricultural science.

Osita Ogbu OON is a Nigerian politician. He is the professor of development economics at the University of Nigeria. He was the Minister of National Planning in Nigeria from 2005 to 2006, and former Chief Economic Advisor to the President of Nigeria. He once served as the Executive Director of the African Technology Policy Studies Network, Nairobi, after having served as Senior Program Specialist-Economics of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada and Consultant Research Economist of the World Bank, Washington D.C. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba is a Nigerian Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology who served as the 14th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He succeeded Bath Okolo who was the 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria. After his tenure, he handed over to the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe. Ozumba served as the provost of the college of medicine of the same university between the years 2004 and 2008. The University of Nigeria became the first university in Nigeria to assemble laptops when he was appointed Vice Chancellor and the university opened its first indigenous University Laptop Assembly Complex. The first batch of laptops bearing the Lion brand were released. UNN also founded the Lion Science Park, Nigeria's first university-based science park. A gasification plant was constructed to create synthetic gas from organic solid materials for use in the production of electric power and other uses for the University of Nigeria community. During his tenure also, the University of Nigeria held the first position amongst Nigerian universities in the Webometrics University Ranking for more than three times in Google Scholar citation profiles.

Okechukwu Ikejiani was a highly regarded anaesthetist a Nigerian medical doctor who later became involved in politics during Nigeria's First Republic. He was appointed Chairman of the Railway Corporation in 1960. In addition to the above, the late Okechukwu Ikejiani held close relations with the Middle East with particular focus on oil production.

Timothy Uzodinma Nwala is a Nigerian professor of Philosophy. He is recorded as the father of contemporary African Philosophy and was the first Nigerian graduate in philosophy from an indigenous University. The African Philosophy courses he developed later were adopted in the curricula of many universities in Africa and the United States. He is the author of the book, Igbo Philosophy.
