Mirza Mohammad Afridi is a Pakistani politician [1] who has been a Member of the Senate of Pakistan,since March 2018 and the outgoing Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan since 12 March 2021.
Mirza Mohammad Afridi's name first emerged in the political arena at the highest level when he was independently elected a senator from the former FATA in 2018. He joined Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) immediately after getting elected in a meeting with Mian Nawaz Sharif and Ameer Muqaam in Islamabad. The joining was submitted to the Senate as well as Election Commission of Pakistan and the record shows till date. He later changed loyalties and supported Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in 2019 after meeting the Prime Minister Imran Khan at Banni Gala despite being registered as a PMLN member in the Senate and Election Commission of Pakistan. [2] In this regard,the statement of PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah has also come to light that Mirza Muhammad Afridi had joined the Noon League after being elected as a senator in 2018. Mirza Muhammad Afridi belongs to the Sipah,a sub-branch of the Afridi tribe in the Khyber tribal region of Pakistan. Mirza Mohammad Afridi is the cousin of Peshawar Zalmi and Haier Company owner Javed Afridi and nephew of former Senator Haji Mohammad Shah Afridi. Mirza Muhammad Afridi is an industrialist and businessman. Local journalists from Khyber District reported that Mirza Mohammad Afridi's family left the area about 30 years ago and settled in Lahore. Education also continued there.
Afridi was elected to the Senate of Pakistan as an independent candidate on general seat from FATA in the 2018 Pakistani Senate election. [3] [4] He joined the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PMLN) in 2018. [2] in 2020 he changed his loyalty and joined PTI,while Election Commission records showed that he was still a member of PMLN. Despite being part of PMLN,Imran Khan nominated him for the slot of Senate Deputy Chairman as a reward for changing loyalties.
The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (Urdu:پاکستانمسلملیگ(ن),abbr.PML(N) or PML-N) is a centre-right,conservative liberal political party in Pakistan. It is currently the third-largest party in the Senate. The party was founded in 1993,when a number of prominent conservative politicians in the country joined hands after the dissolution of Islamic Democratic Alliance,under the leadership of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The party's platform is generally conservative,which involves supporting free markets,deregulation,lower taxes and private ownership. Although the party historically supported social conservatism,in recent years,the party's political ideology and platform has become more liberal on social and cultural issues;however,members have been accused of using Islamist populist rhetoric. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is a political party in Pakistan established in 1996 by Pakistani cricketer and politician Imran Khan,who served as the country's prime minister from 2018 to 2022. The PTI ranks among the three major Pakistani political parties alongside the Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML–N) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP),and it is the largest party in terms of representation in the National Assembly of Pakistan since the 2018 general election. With over 10 million members in Pakistan and abroad,it claims to be the country's largest political party by primary membership,as well as one of the largest political parties in the world.
General elections were held in Pakistan on Saturday 11 May 2013 to elect the members of the 14th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif,the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) led by President Asif Ali Zardari and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan. Prior to the elections,the ruling PPP formed an alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) and Awami National Party,while the main opposition party,the PML-N allied with the Pakistan Muslim League (F) and Baloch parties. The PTI led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan,also emerged as a key-player.
General elections were held in Pakistan on 25 July 2018 to elect the members of the 15th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI),led by Imran Khan,the Pakistan Muslim League,led by Shehbaz Sharif,and the Pakistan People's Party,led by Bilawal Bhutto. The PTI won the most seats in the National Assembly but fell short of a majority;the party subsequently formed a coalition government with several smaller parties. At the provincial level,the PTI remained the largest party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP);the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) retained its dominance in Sindh;and the newly formed Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) emerged as the largest party in Balochistan. In Punjab,the result was a hung parliament,with the Pakistan Muslim League (N) winning the most seats. However,after several independent MPAs joined the PTI,the latter became the largest party and was able to form a government.
The third Nawaz Sharif ministry was formed at noon PKT on 5 June 2013 when Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif became the prime minister of Pakistan for the third time. Sharif successfully led the right-of-centre and conservative PML-N to acquire a simple majority. in the 2013 general election against the leftist Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the centrist Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Senate elections were held in Pakistan on 5 March 2015 to elect the replacements for 52 retiring senators. Those retiring include chairman Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and deputy chairman Sabir Ali Baloch of the upper house. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP),the majority party in Senate,would lose 21 members,followed by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz would lose 9 and Awami National Party would lose 6 members.
The triennial Senate Electionsof Pakistan were held on 3 March 2018 to replace 52 retiring senators - half of the Senate's strength - with the winning candidates serving six-year terms. Overall,Pakistan Muslim League (N) came out as the largest party,followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The results of these elections were steeped in controversy due to rampant allegations of horse trading and vote-buying,which lead to the Prime Minister and opposition leader Imran Khan calling for reforms. Prior to this election,PML (N) candidates were declared as independents by the Election Commission of Pakistan owing to a Supreme Court judgment.

The Election commission of Pakistan announced the election schedule on 11 February 2021. 52 of the 104 Senators had retired on 7 February 2021. After the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhawa,FATA seats were abolished and there was no election on 4 of the 8 seats. The rest of the 4 seats will be abolished in 2024. Official results of the Senate Elections were announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan on 10 March 2021.
The 2024 Pakistani Senate election is scheduled to be held on 2 April 2024.
General elections were held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday,25 July 2018 to elect the 51 members of 15th National Assembly from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) obtained a landslide victory in the province by winning 37 general seats and increased their margin of victory from 2013. The PTI also won 8 out of 10 reserved seats while the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) won 1 reserved seat each.
