The 2016 Sanfrecce Hiroshima season is the club's eighth consecutive season in J1 League, and 46th overall in the Japanese top flight. Sanfrecce Hiroshima are also competing in the 2016 Japanese Super Cup and the 2016 AFC Champions League.

The 2015 season was Sanfrecce Hiroshima's seventh consecutive season in J.League Division 1, and 45th overall in the Japanese top flight. Sanfrecce Hiroshima also competed in the Emperor's Cup, J.League Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. The club secured its third J1 League title after beating Gamba Osaka on aggregate on 5 December 2015.

Cerezo Osaka were making their third J.League Cup final appearance after winning the competition in 2017 and finishing runners-up in 2021. Sanfrecce Hiroshima had previously appeared in two J.League cup finals but were beaten on both occasions in 2010 and 2014.
