Kohima is the capital of the North East Indian state of Nagaland. With a resident population of almost 100,000, it is the second largest city in the state. Kohima constitutes both a district and a municipality. The municipality covers 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi). The city lies on the foothills of Japfü section of the Barail Range located south of the District and has an average elevation of 1,261 m (4,137 ft).

It is situated on the left bank of the Chathe and with its surrounding area that includes several other towns and villages, the Chümoukedima Metropolitan Area is the largest urban agglomeration in Nagaland in terms of area and third largest in terms of population, after Dimapur and Kohima.
Nagaland University is a Central University established in the state of Nagaland by an Act of Parliament by the Government of India in 1989. It is headquartered at Lumami, Zünheboto District. Two other permanent campuses are located at Meriema and Medziphema. Also there is a temporary campus in Dimapur where B. Tech courses are offered. Altogether 70 colleges are affiliated to the university with a total student population of around 24,000. The Morung Express is an English-language newspaper published in Nagaland, India. It covers Nagaland state, national, and international news, and publishes opinion pieces and reviews. It was the first print newspaper in Nagaland with an online edition. It is headquartered at Dimapur. As of August 2024, The Morung Express second-largest newspaper by print circulation in Nagaland.
The Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ) is an autonomous government institute for undergraduate and postgraduate science education located at Jotsoma in the state of Nagaland, India. The college was established in 1961 with science education in higher secondary and under graduate levels.

Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) is a medical institute and hospital located in Chümoukedima, Nagaland, India. Founded in 1988 as the Referral Hospital. In 2006, the hospital was handed over to the Christian Medical College and Emmanuel Hospital Association and the Government of Nagaland under a tripartite MoU partnership agreement and was renamed the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research. The campus is situated on a land area of 130 acres and is the largest medical center in Nagaland.
