History

Modulex was founded as an independent company in 1963 by The Lego Group. [3] Over the years, the multi-national group has built multiple factories globally with a presence in over 300 cities across 45 countries. [3]

At the inception of the group in 1963, Architectural models were the first Modulex product introduced into the Danish market. [4] The following year the product was launched in England and Germany. In 1965, the production and sales of the models were switched to an Industrial layout. [4]

In 1966 and 1967, the Control board was introduced. In the following years, Modulex A/S built a software kit for this product which increased sales. In 1972, Pocket boards which is another planning product was introduced. [4]

In 1974, Modulex started developing a new product line known as Sign Systems. the company introduced the first sign system known as Interior which received the coveted ID prize, awarded annually to the best Danish design. In 1979, the group introduced the exterior sign system known as Exterior 500. [4]

In 1982 Modulex entered the Middle East market. Within the period, the group developed an Arabic component system whuch received the IG prize for the best graphic design. The group also launched a new planning system known as Plancopy in the same year. [4]

In 1983, Modulex introduced another novelty known as Interior 20 Flex. In 1984, the group launched Interior 30, a sign system that gave designers and architects unprecedented possibilities within graphics and design. The group also created a new business unit and introduced the first digital product known as EDS 700. [4]

In the autumn of 1991, Modulex launched a new sign, a monolith system named Manhattan. In September 1991, Modulex was certified according to lISO 9001 after many years of work with a quality system. [4]

In 1992, Modulex developed a special line of products for the North American market based on two products, Interior 10 and Interior 20. In 1993, a new exterior sign system with curved shapes known as Pacific was developed. [4]

In the fall of 1993, Milano was launched; an interior sign system mode of 100% aluminium. [4] In March 1996, the first phase of Pacific Interior was introduced, a sign system with curved panels mounted on injection moulded frame members. Towards the end of 1995, the company initiated a rationalisation project called COSI (concentration and simplification). In March 1997, Pacific Interior became a complete sign system. [4]

In March 1998, Modulex introduced Quadro; a simple sign developed for the identification of persons outdoors or at a workstation. [4] In June 1999, the group introduce a completely new interior system known as Infinity. [4]

On January 1, 2000, all marketing of the two product lines Interior 30 and Milano was stopped. [4] In October, a new Windload evaluation system was introduced in connection with all exterior product lines. In October, 2000, the Atlantic product line was also introduced. [4]

In the autumn of 2005, Silhouette Interior was introduced to the market. [4] In the Fall of 2006, Modulex introduced Face to the market after a long development time. The product used laser cutting technology to shape aluminium plates with the possibility for illumination with light-emitting diodes (LED) either with outline or corona effect. [4]

In 2008 the Design + Build creative services division is introduced, offering an integrated model that combines fabrication and installation for enhanced project delivery. [5]

Lego began in 1932 in the carpentry workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter. He initially produced furniture but later started making wooden toys. The company was named "Lego" in 1934, a contraction from the Danish phrase "leg godt", meaning "play well". Coincidentally, ‘lego’ means ‘I put together’ in Latin.

Lego Belville was a Lego theme designed to appeal primarily to girls. First introduced in 1994, the theme included multi-jointed doll-like characters that were larger in scale than the traditional Lego minifigure. The toy sets were produced from standard Lego bricks and larger pieces, often in a pink and purple colour scheme, and depicted scenes from fairy tales and fantasy as well as everyday life. The product line was discontinued in 2009. Belville's direct successor is Lego Friends, which was introduced in 2012. Lego Modular Buildings is a series of Lego building toy sets introduced in 2007, with new sets usually being released annually. Created in response to feedback and suggestions from the Adult Fans of Lego bricks (AFOL) and Teen Fans of Lego (TFOL) communities, the sets in this series are generally intended for more advanced builders. Most sets contain more than 2,000 total pieces and make use of unorthodox building techniques not usually used in previous official Lego sets. In contrast to most Lego sets aimed at children and adolescents, the suggested age of most sets in the Lego Modular Buildings series is 16 years or older. The Lego Modular Buildings sets have been received with positive reviews and are considered by Lego designers and fans as "adult collection".

Lego Education is a Lego theme designed specifically for schools that concentrates sets that can be used by education institutions and includes sets that focus on Duplo and Technic themes and contain larger amounts of pieces. The theme was first introduced in 1999.

Lego Racers was a Lego product line with the first wave of sets being released in 2001. The range was first introduced in 2001 named after the Lego Racers video game series with the first wave of sets being based on the Xalax segment of Lego Racers 2. The earlier sets were designed more as racing car toys than construction toy, and included a launcher element that could be used to propel the vehicles. Over time the theme developed and became more in line with the style of other Lego products, while still encouraging a racing form of gameplay. The theme also included licensed models of real-life high-speed cars, such as a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Ferrari FXX. The product line was discontinued in 2013 after 12 years. A spiritual successor Lego Speed Champions was released in 2015, with a similar premise.

Lego Ninjago is a Lego theme that was created in 2011 and a flagship brand of The Lego Group. It is the first theme to be based on ninja since the discontinuation of the Lego Ninja theme in 2000. It was produced to coincide with the animated television series Ninjago, which was superseded in 2023 by a new series titled Ninjago: Dragons Rising.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lego Friends</span> Lego theme

Lego Friends are a product range of Lego construction toys designed primarily for girls that was launched in 2012. It introduced "mini-doll" figures, which are about the same size as traditional Lego minifigures but are more detailed and realistic. The original cast consisted of Andrea, Olivia, Stephanie, Mia and Emma. The theme was rebooted and relaunched in January 2023 to focus on a more diverse cast of characters, the main cast now consisting of Aliya, Nova, Zac, Liann, Paisley, Leo, Autumn and Olly.

Lego Icons is a series of Lego construction toys aimed at a demographic of adolescents and adults. Beginning in 2000 without an established logo or icon, Icons features models such as aircraft, sculptures, and world buildings, selling as exclusives with numerous specialized elements and complex building techniques. Icons is considered a challenge to both the target audience and Lego designers. All Icons sets are classified into specified sub-themes; however, the entirety of Icons is classified as a sub-theme of Lego Creator.
