History

Modulex was founded as an independent company in 1963 by The Lego Group. [3] Over the years, the multi-national group has built multiple factories globally with a presence in over 300 cities across 45 countries. [3]

At the inception of the group in 1963, Architectural models were the first Modulex product introduced into the Danish market. [4] The following year the product was launched in England and Germany. In 1965, the production and sales of the models were switched to an Industrial layout. [4]

In 1966 and 1967, the Control board was introduced. In the following years, Modulex A/S built a software kit for this product which increased sales. In 1972, Pocket boards which is another planning product was introduced. [4]

In 1974, Modulex started developing a new product line known as Sign Systems. the company introduced the first sign system known as Interior which received the coveted ID prize, awarded annually to the best Danish design. In 1979, the group introduced the exterior sign system known as Exterior 500. [4]

In 1982 Modulex entered the Middle East market. Within the period, the group developed an Arabic component system which received the IG prize for the best graphic design. The group also launched a new planning system known as Plancopy in the same year. [4]

In 1983, Modulex introduced another novelty known as Interior 20 Flex. In 1984, the group launched Interior 30, a sign system that gave designers and architects unprecedented possibilities within graphics and design. The group also created a new business unit and introduced the first digital product known as EDS 700. [4]

In the autumn of 1991, Modulex launched a new sign, a monolith system named Manhattan. In September 1991, Modulex was certified according to lISO 9001 after many years of work with a quality system. [4]

In 1992, Modulex developed a special line of products for the North American market based on two products, Interior 10 and Interior 20. In 1993, a new exterior sign system with curved shapes known as Pacific was developed. [4]

In the fall of 1993, Milano was launched; an interior sign system mode of 100% aluminium. [4] In March 1996, the first phase of Pacific Interior was introduced, a sign system with curved panels mounted on injection moulded frame members. Towards the end of 1995, the company initiated a rationalisation project called COSI (concentration and simplification). In March 1997, Pacific Interior became a complete sign system. [4]

In March 1998, Modulex introduced Quadro; a simple sign developed for the identification of persons outdoors or at a workstation. [4] In June 1999, the group introduce a completely new interior system known as Infinity. [4]

On January 1, 2000, all marketing of the two product lines Interior 30 and Milano was stopped. [4] In October, a new Windload evaluation system was introduced in connection with all exterior product lines. In October, 2000, the Atlantic product line was also introduced. [4]

In the autumn of 2005, Silhouette Interior was introduced to the market. [4] In the Fall of 2006, Modulex introduced Face to the market after a long development time. The product used laser cutting technology to shape aluminium plates with the possibility for illumination with light-emitting diodes (LED) either with outline or corona effect. [4]

In 2008 the Design + Build creative services division is introduced, offering an integrated model that combines fabrication and installation for enhanced project delivery. [5]

From 2019 to present, eco-friendly materials are introduced, offering a more sustainable option for signage materials. [6]

In 2023, the group records best financial performance. [7]

Products and services

Modulex offers wayfinding and architectural signage solutions[ buzzword ], Global Brand Rollouts/Implementations, and cloud based project management for diverse industries including Governments, Corporates, Healthcare, Education, Hospitality, residential and many more. [8]

Over the following decade, it became one of the company's biggest-selling properties, turning into a franchise and subsequently becoming one of the factors in saving Lego from its financial crisis of the late 1990s. Despite a planned twenty-year tenure, the theme was discontinued in 2010, citing low sales, but was rebooted in 2015 for a further two years.

Ole Kirk Christiansen was a Danish carpenter. In 1932, he founded the construction toy company Lego, later known as The Lego Group. Christiansen transformed his small woodworking shop, which initially sold household products, into a manufacturer of wooden toys. By 1934, he had officially named the company Lego and established its fundamental principles. The business shifted to producing plastic bricks after the acquisition of a plastic moulding injection machine in 1947. Following his death in 1958, the company's management was handed over to his son, Godtfred.

During the Great Depression, he began to make miniature versions of his products, which inspired him to produce toys. Legoland Billund Resort, the original Legoland park, opened on 7 June 1968 in Billund, Denmark. The park is located next to the original Lego factory and Billund Airport, Denmark's second-busiest airport. Over 1.9 million guests visited the park in 2011, and 50 million guests have visited the park since it opened. This makes Legoland the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside Copenhagen. The Legoland parks that have since been built are modelled upon Legoland Billund, most noticeably the Miniland area, which is made up of millions of plastic Lego bricks.

Godtfred Kirk Christiansen was the managing director of The Lego Group from 1957 to 1973. He was the third son of company founder Ole Kirk Christiansen and took over as managing director in 1957, eventually becoming the sole owner. Godtfred is credited with playing a pivotal role in the development of the Lego brick design and patented it in 1958. He also created the Lego System in Play, the cornerstone of the Lego construction toy. Godtfred stepped down as Leader of the company in 1973. His son Kjeld Kirk Christiansen became president in 1979.

Visitors can experience a variety of activities during their visit, including physically and digitally building with Lego bricks, programming robots and animating models. The centre's visitor experience includes four experience zones, two exhibitions and the Lego Museum, which showcases the history of the Lego brand and company.
