Mofida Ahmed (1921-2008) was an Indian politician belonging to the Indian National Congress. She was Assam's first female Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha and also one of the first few Muslim women to be a Member of Parliament [1] in India.

Early life and education

She was born in Jorhat Town to Md. Barua Ali in November 1921. [1] She pursued her education privately. Later in life, she contributed articles to Assamese journals. [1] Her works include Biswadip-Bapuji and Bharatar-Nehru. [1]

Career

Ahmed worked for the National Savings Scheme in an honorary capacity (14-7-55 to 19-1-57), as a Joint Secretary at Red Cross Society, Jorhat (1946–1949). [1] She was also the Convener of The Women's department of the Congress at Golaghat since its inception in 1953 to the end of 1956. She also served as the assistant Secretary at Tezpur District to the Mahila Samiti (October 1951 to January 1953) at maternity welfare for rescue of fallen women. [1]

Personal life

She married Asanuddin Ahmed on 11 December 1940. She liked reading, knitting, sewing and gardening . [1] She died at the age of 88 on 17 January 2008 following old age ailments. [2]

Nalini Bala Devi was an Indian writer and poet of Assamese literature, known for nationalistic as well as mystical poetry. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1957 for her contribution to literature, and 1968 she won the Sahitya Akademi Award given by Sahitya Akademi for her poetry collection Alakananda. She is the first woman Assamese poet to be awarded with Padma Shri and the first lady to the chair the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

The All People's Party or Sarbadal was a political party in Assam, northeast India. The party was founded in Dibrugarh by Ahom elites on May 8, 1945. It united different groups that sought to challenge the Indian National Congress in elections. The All India Muslim League, the Tribal League and the Ahom Sabha took part in the founding of the party. The party sought to mobilise the Kachari, Muttock and Deuri communities, to compete against caste Hindus for political influence. To a large extent, the party represented tea garden labourers. During its initial period, the party demanded that the British colonial government should create a separate Ahom constituency. The party cooperated with the Muslim League, being united in their opposition against the Congress party.

Drupad Borgohain was an Indian politician. He was a veteran leader of the left-wing in the Assam state. As of 2014 he was the secretary of the Assam State Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI), a position he held since 1987. Hema Bharali was an Indian freedom activist, social worker, Sarvodaya leader and Gandhian, known for her contributions for the empowerment of women and efforts towards the upliftment of the socially and financially challenged sections of the society. She was reported to have been active during the relief operations in the wake of the earthquake in North Lakhimpur of Assam state in 1950 and in the development activities after the Sino-Indian War of 1962. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2005, for her contributions to Indian society. A year later, she received the National Communal Harmony Award from the National Foundation for Communal Harmony, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sheela Borthakur was an Indian social worker, littérateur and the founder president of the Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samity (SALSS), a non governmental organization working in the socio-cultural and literary milieu of Assam. She served as the president of the organization for three terms, 1974 to 1976, 1990 to 1992 and 1993 to 1994 and as its general secretary for two terms, from 1976 to 1990.

Pushpalata Das (1915–2003) was an Indian independence activist, social worker, Gandhian and legislator from the north-east Indian state of Assam. She was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1951 to 1961, a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly and a member of the working committee of the Indian National Congress. She served as the chairperson of the Assam chapters of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and Khadi and Village Industries Commission. The Government of India awarded her the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1999, for her contributions to society.

Eli Ahmed is an Indian writer, scriptwriter, director, lyricist, costume designer, actress and social activist. She is also the editor, publisher and proprietor of ‘Orani’, the women's magazine. It is the only women's magazine in the Northeast since 1970. She had also organised the first women's drama group in Assam in 1967. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2017 for her contribution to literature and education.

Anis Kidwai (1906–1982) was a writer, an activist and a politician from Uttar Pradesh. She worked towards peace and the rehabilitation of the victims of India's bloody partition, and spent a majority of her life in service of the newly independent India. She served two terms as a Member of the Parliament in the Rajya Sabha as a part of the Indian National Congress from 1956 to 1962.

Hajrah Begum (1910-2003) was an Indian politician, a leader of the Communist Party of India and the former General Secretary National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) from 1954 to 1962.
