Mohammad Ali Mia is a Bangladeshi police officer and an Additional Inspector General of Police of Bangladesh Police. He is the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Earlier,he was the chief of Tourist Police. [1] He was posted in different posts of Bangladesh Police. Among them,he served as police's special branch (SB) DIG,Additional DIG of Dhaka Range as well as SP of Habiganj and Manikganj districts. [2]
Mia is from Gopalganj District. [3]
Mia joined Bangladesh Police as an assistant superintendent of police in 15 November 1995. During the 2001 to 2006,Bangladesh Nationalist Party government he was sidelined for being from Gopalganj. [3] He served in the Criminal Investigation Department as an Additional Superintendent of Police. [3] In 2007,he was stationed in a diplomatic mission of Bangladesh. [3]
In 2007,Mia was the Deputy Commissioner of Traffic of Chittagong Metropolitan Police. [4] He took actions against 1500 illegal tuktuks and praised the media for their reporting that brought attention to the issue. [4] Mia served as the Superintendent of Police of Narsingdi District,Manikganj District and Habiganj District . [5] [6]
In 2013,Mia was serving as the Additional DIG of Special Branch when he was transferred to Rajshahi Range Police. [7]
Mia was made the chief of Criminal Investigation Department on 23 August 2022. [8] He had been serving as the head of the Tourist Police after replacing Mahbubur Rahman. [2] As CID chief,he talked about his intention to crack down on Hundi networks due to the volatile situation of the foreign currency exchange market in Bangladesh. [9] [10] [11] He played critical role in uncovering the illegal Hundi businesses carried out by the MFS agents and their distributions houses. [12] Furthermore,he spearheaded CID in targeting different financial institutions,organized crime syndicates,real estate firms,trade-based sectors and even non-profitable organizations on allegations of money laundering. [13] He greatly enhanced and expanded the services of the Cyber Monitoring Cell of CID to combat cyber crime rackets such as fraud apps,Ponzi Scheme based e-commerce websites,betting apps etc. [14] [15] His one of the most acclaimed initiative is the drive against medical examination question paper leakers who had been active in their criminal operation for the last 16 years. Manikganj is a district in central Bangladesh and part of the Dhaka Division. Established in 1845,it was originally a subdivision of Faridpur District. In 1956,it was included in Dhaka District for administrative purposes. In 1984,Manikganj was declared a full district.
The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina,the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated to this date.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is a specialized intelligence and investigation wing of the Bangladesh Police. It is headquartered in Malibagh,Dhaka and maintains a training school named the Detective Training School. Personnel attached to this wing essentially work in plain clothes. The 2015 Bangladeshi political crisis is an ongoing state of political turmoil between the two main political parties of Bangladesh,the Awami League (AL) led by prime minister Sheikh Hasina who is currently in power,and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in opposition,led by three time former prime minister Khaleda Zia. Following the controversial 2014 Bangladeshi general election,the BNP raised several demands for a second election under a neutral caretaker government. By 5 January 2015,the first anniversary of the election,their demands were not met and the BNP initiated countrywide protests and traffic blockades. After many violent and fatal attacks on the public by alleged BNP protesters,the AL branded the BNP as terrorists and Khaleda Zia was forcefully confined to her office. The BNP then called the international community for support,but other nations were reluctant to intervene as the BNP's reputation was damaged by the violence and the international community reiterated that the disputes should be handled peacefully.
