Mohammad Abdulwahab al-Shaibani (born 1968 in Ta'izz) is a Yemeni cultural journalist and poet living in Sana'a. He is a member of the Yemeni Writers Union and belongs to the modern Yemeni poetry movement. [1] He has published three poetry collections as of 2011, [2] with some of his work having been published in Banipal magazine.

Yemen Republic in Western Asia

Yemen, officially the Republic of Yemen, is a country at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. It is the second-largest Arab sovereign state in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 square kilometres. The coastline stretches for about 2,000 kilometres. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Guardafui Channel to the south, and the Arabian Sea and Oman to the east. Banipal is an independent literary magazine dedicated to the promotion of contemporary Arab literature through translations in English. It was founded in London in 1998 by Margaret Obank and Samuel Shimon. The magazine is published three times a year. Since its inception, it has published works and interviews of numerous Arab authors and poets, many of them translated for the first time into English. It is also co-sponsor of the Saif Ghobash–Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation.

Abdullah Al-Baradouni Yemeni poet

Abdullah Al-Baradouni (1929–1999) was a Yemeni writer and poet. He had published 12 poetry books as well as six other books on such topics as politics, folklore, and literature. He is considered Yemen's most famous poet.

Bassam Shamseldin is a Yemeni novelist and short story writer. He was born in the southern province of Ibb. He has published several novels and collections of short stories, and his work was featured in Banipal magazine, in an issue devoted to contemporary Yemeni writing.

Hoda Ablan is a Yemeni poet. She was born in Ibb and studied at the University of Sanaa, obtaining a master's degree in political science in 1993. Her first collection of poetry Wurud shaqiyat al-malamih was published in Damascus in 1989. She has since published several other poetry collections. Her work has appeared in translation in several outlets including two issues of Banipal magazine. Her poetry was also anthologised in a 2001 collection titled The poetry of Arab women : a contemporary anthology, edited by Nathalie Handal.

Nabila Muhsin Ali al-Zubayr is a Yemeni poet and novelist. She was born in the village of al-Hagara in the Haraz region and studied at the University of Sanaa, obtaining a BA in psychology. In the past, she has been a regular contributor to Yemeni journals al-Thawra, al-'Uruba, al-Mithaq and al-Mar'a. Her first book of poems titled Mutawaliyat al-kidhba al-ra'i'a was published in Damascus in 1990. She has published further volumes of poetry since.

Habib Abdulrab Sarori is a Yemeni computer scientist and novelist. He was born in Aden and pursued higher studies in France, obtaining a master's degree in Informatics from the University of Paris 6 in 1983, followed by a PhD from the University of Rouen in 1987. He is currently a professor in the Mathematical and Software Engineering Department at Rouen and also at INSA de Rouen. He has published numerous scientific papers over the last two decades. He is also the author of textbooks in computer science.

Wajdi al-Ahdal is a Yemeni novelist, short story writer and playwright. He was born near Bajil in the province of Al Hudaydah and studied at the University of Sanaa. Ahdal has published four novels, four collections of short stories, a play and a film screenplay.

Ali al-Muqri is a Yemeni novelist and writer. The author's work has been published in Banipal magazine. Two of his recent novels Black Taste, Black Odour and The Handsome Jew have been long listed for the Arab Booker Prize. He has also been awarded the French Prize for Arabic Literature over the novel entitled, Ḥurma, translated into French by Khaled Osman and Ola Mehanna.

Mohammad al-Qaood is a Yemeni poet and short story writer. The author's work has been published in Banipal magazine. The author of 13 books of poetry, prose and short stories, he is the cultural editor of the al-Thawra newspaper which is based in the capital of Sana’a.

Ali Mohammed Zayd is a Yemeni ambassador, writer and translator, currently living in Paris. He was delegate of Yemen to UNESCO from 1990–2000 and has published three novels, two historical works and translated works into Arabic from French and English. Ahmad Zein is a Yemeni writer and journalist, currently living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he works for the Al-Hayat newspaper. He is the author of two novels and two short story collections. The author's work has been published in Banipal magazine.

Beirut39 is a collaborative project between the Hay Festival, Beirut UNESCO's World Book Capital 2009 celebrations, Banipal magazine and the British Council among others in order to identify 39 of the most promising Arab writers under the age of 39. The project was carried out during 2009-10 and followed on the success of Bogotá39, an earlier contest held in 2007 to identify the most promising young Latin American writers. In connection with Port Harcourt being World Book Capital 2014, Africa39 was launched by Hay Festival, featuring 39 writers under the age of 40 from sub-Saharan Africa.

Ebrahim al-Khaldi is a Kuwaiti journalist and writer. An employee of the daily Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Watan, he has published two collections of poetry and a book of essays. His work has been published Banipal magazine.

Nadia Al-Kokabany is a Yemeni novelist, short story writer and academic. She was born in Taiz and studied architecture at Sanaa University. She completed a PhD in architecture at Cairo University in 2008, before returning to take up an academic position at Sanaa University.

Yasir Abdel Baqi is a Yemeni novelist, screenwriter, journalist and author. He was born in Aden and studied history and antiquities at university. His first book of short stories was called Ahlam (Dreams) followed by a collection called Night Woman. His controversial novel Zahavar appeared in 2008.

Saif al-Rahbi is an Omani poet, essayist and writer. He was born in Oman in a village called Suroor. In 1970, while he was still in his early teens, al-Rahbi was sent to school in Cairo. Afterwards, he lived and worked abroad for many years, in Cairo, Damascus, Algeria, Paris and London among others.
