Gedo is an administrative region (gobol) in Jubaland, southern Somalia. Its regional capital is Garbahaarreey. It was created in 1974 and is bordered by the Ogaden in Ethiopia, the North Eastern Province in Kenya, and the Somali regions of Bakool, Bay, Jubbada Dhexe, and Jubbada Hoose further down east. The Majeerteen is a Somali clan. It is one of the major Somali clans, with a vast traditional territory spanning 3 major regions of Somalia: Bari, Nugaal and Mudug. From Bosaso down to Garacad, the Majerteen settle in what is literally considered to be the 'Horn of Africa'. They can also be found in Kismayo in southern Somalia. Its members form a part of the Harti Darod clan family, and primarily inhabit the Puntland state of northern Somalia.

The Central Somalia Spring Fighting of 2009 was a series of battles in Hiraan, Shabeellaha Dhexe and Galgudug between rebels of al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam and government forces and ICU militants loyal to the government, during spring 2009 as well as pro-government militia of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah. The fighting led to al-Shabaab capturing major government strongholds and Ethiopian forces re-entering Somalia and setting up bases in Hiraan. There was a halt in fighting during a government offensive in Mogadishu, which started on May 22.

The Gabtaanle is a Somali clan. It is a sub-clan of Ahmed Harti, also called Mooracase, with Dishiishe, Tiinle and Maganlabe as brother clans. Gabtaanle's forefather was the first man to settle in the area currently known as Bosaso. The clan members have permanent presence in the Bari and Sanaag regions in Somalia, particularly Bosaso, and Dhahar among other towns and villages.
