Plot

27 hours before their wedding, Barney and Robin scramble to find an officiant after their minister's death. James's father, Sam, a minister, steps in to officiate. Barney tries to reunite his parents by trapping them in an elevator with champagne, but they see through the plan. Meanwhile, Ted accidentally ruins a Wayne Gretzky photo meant for Robin, blaming Billy Zabka, only to discover Zabka's innocence and the true cause of the spill. Zabka seeks redemption by attempting to replace the photo. Marshall and Daphne reconcile, and Marshall supports Daphne at her daughter's Model UN speech, highlighting family importance. Barney accepts his mother's relationship with Sam after realizing James's need for family unity. The subplot concludes with Jerry reclaiming his wife, resolving the limousine mix-up.

Critical reception

Bill Kuchman of Popculturology singled out the lack of the Mother as the show's biggest problem now, saying, "Once we've seen The Mother, and with every additional time she's in an episode, it becomes harder to go back to an episode that she's not in." [1]

The A.V. Club 's Donna Bowman graded the episode a B+. [2]

Max Nicholson of IGN gave the episode 5.0/10, saying that it squandered another half-hour of the wedding weekend with three subpar storylines. [3]

Angel Cohn at Television Without Pity gave the episode a D. [4]
