The "Monheim Triennale" is an international music festival that aims to document pioneering artistic positions in contemporary music. [1] It is to take place every three years starting in 2023 at the "Kulturraffinerie K714", an industrial monument located directly on the Rhine, which will then be converted into an event venue. [2] In 2020, the first edition of the festival will be held in several venues along the Rhine. The artistic director is Reiner Michalke, [3] who was artistic director of the Moers Festival from 2006 to 2016 and is now programme director at the Stadtgarten in Cologne. [4] [5]

History

After a one-year planning phase, the city council of Monheim am Rhein unanimously decided on 10 October 2018 to hold the Monheim Triennale. [6] The first edition will be held from 1 to 5 July 2020 in various venues such as the not yet completed industrial hall "Kulturraffinerie K714", the socio-cultural centre "Sojus 7", the Marienkapelle, the new event ship of KD - the MS Rhein Galaxie - and the Deusser Garten. [7] [8] In February 2019, a five-member board of trustees was appointed to jointly select the artists for the first edition. Among them are performance artist and professor for aesthetic practices Swantje Lichtenstein from Düsseldorf, music curator Louis Rastig from Berlin, Managing Artistic Director Rainbow Robert from Vancouver, Creative & Brand Consultant Meghan Stabile from New York City and music journalist and co-editor of Kaput magazine for Insolvency & Pop Thomas Venker from Cologne. Artist in Residence

At the beginning of 2019, Reiner Michalke called the musician Achim Tang to Monheim am Rhein to convey the festival content. Tang has already worked for Michalke as Improviser in Residence at the Moers Festival in 2011. [11]

Festival Design

The festival design of the Monheim Triennale was created by the Greek graphic artist Vasilis Marmatakis. Marmatakis created the graphic design for Yorgos Lanthimos' films "The Lobster" (2015), "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" (2017), "The Favourite" (2018) and "Nimic" (2019), among others. The design concept is based on the visualization of physical and typographic elements through the experience of sound. Vasilis Marmatakis has designed a series of images with patterns like those found on "Mesh Covers" - patterns of perforated fabric or metal used to cover loudspeakers. He transfers these onto solid material and then works them with ink. The resulting traces visualize the acoustic resonance between source and receiver. [12] [13]

The Moers Festival is an annual international music festival in Moers, Germany. The festival has changed from concentrating on free jazz to including world and pop music, though it still invites many avant-garde jazz musicians. Performers at Moers include Lester Bowie, Fred Frith, Jan Garbarek, Herbie Hancock, Abdullah Ibrahim, David Murray, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, and Cecil Taylor. The festival is officially named "mœrs festival" with lowercase letters.

Vapiano is a German restaurant franchise company headquartered in Cologne. The chain's restaurants offer Italian food adhering to the fast-casual principle. Vapiano was established in 2002 in Hamburg. Its largest shareholder since 2011 is the private equity firm, Mayfair Vermögensverwaltung. Roughly one-third of the restaurants are operated by the company itself, but the majority are run as franchise or as joint ventures. In April 2017, Vapiano had 180 locations in 31 countries, including Australia, China, Egypt and the United States. Ruhrtriennale

The Ruhrtriennale also known as Ruhr Triennale, was founded in 2002 and is a music and arts festival in the Ruhr-area of Germany which runs between mid-August and mid-October, and happens in three-year cycles. The topics of the festival focus on contemporary social and global upheavals.

Nördlingen–Gunzenhausen railway

The Nördlingen-Gunzenhausen railway is located in northern Swabia and western Middle Franconia. The 40 km route is now a heritage railway, operated with a passenger train that is known as the Lakeland Express after the Franconian Lake District. The line opened in 1849 and is one of the oldest lines in Germany. A partial reactivation of regular passenger traffic is planned.

Reiner Michalke

Reiner Michalke is the artistic director of the concert venue Stadtgarten in Cologne/Germany. From 2005 to 2016 he served as artistic director of the Moers Festival. Since October 2018 he is managing artistic director of the Monheim Triennale.

Marietta Piekenbrock

Marietta Piekenbrock is a German art curator, dramaturge, author and a cultural manager. Her projects combine theatre, dance, performances and music with cultural history, architecture and everyday life. As an artistic manager of the Cultural Capital of Europe RUHR.2010 and Istanbul.2010, and for the Ruhrtriennale 2012-14, she invited international artists and curators to collaborate with the local cultural participants and players on developing new artistic projects in areas of radical social change. Her programmes of events and initiatives made a strong case for sustainable cultural practice. Her 2012 series of events "No Education" promoted a new discourse on the relationship between art, children and education.

Monika Kropshofer is a German painter and photographer. Since the middle of the year 2000 Kropshofer has gained renown through her large-format painted landscape and architecture photographs which were created as a result of her many work journeys and stays in Europe, Africa und Asia.

AnnenMayKantereit

AnnenMayKantereit is a German rock band from Cologne founded in 2011. They sing predominantly in German but sometimes also publish cover songs in English. A notable feature of the band is the distinctly rough voice of the singer Henning May.
