The Monmouth Hawks men's basketball team represents Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Coastal Athletic Association. They are currently led by head coach King Rice and play their home games at the OceanFirst Bank Center. The Hawks had wins over five power conference opponents (UCLA, Notre Dame, USC, Georgetown, and Rutgers) and received votes in the AP poll for the first time ever during the 2015–16 season. They last appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2006.

The Akron Zips men's basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference East division. The Zips are currently coached by John Groce. Prior to becoming members of the MAC in 1992, the Zips were members of the Ohio Valley Conference and the Mid-Continent Conference. They had played in NCAA Division II into the mid 1970s, where they reached the National Championship Game twice, both of which they lost.
The Central Michigan Chippewas team is the basketball team that represent Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The school's team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference. The team currently competes in the Big West Conference after leaving its longtime home of the Western Athletic Conference in July 2012. The team's most recent appearance in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was in 2016, with them getting their first NCAA Tournament victory that same year as well. The Rainbow Warriors are coached by Eran Ganot.

It was only the fifth time that a 15th seed has defeated a 2nd seed. Norfolk State has qualified for the NCAA tournament at the Division I level three times, in 2012, 2021, and 2022.
