Morpheus Descends is a death metal band that first formed in Middletown, New York in 1990 under the name of Morpheus. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes during their run, with their core lineup consisting of founding members Rob Yench and Sam Inzerra. The group initially broke up in 1998 due to a lack of interest in the project. However, in 2013 they reunited, and continue to play live shows. Morpheus Descends is considered to be an important band in the development of the New York death metal scene. [1]
The band performed their first rehearsal on October 31, 1990, with a lineup consisting of bassist Ken Faggio, drummer Sam Inzerra, vocalist Craig Campbell, and guitarists Rob Yench and Steve Hanson. [1] Before the formation of Morpheus Descends (who at this point were called Morpheus, a name inspired by the comic Sandman [2] ), Faggio and Yench were in the band Volatile Zylog, while Campbell, Hanson and Inzerra were in the band Infectious Waste. The two bands played a show together the previous summer. [3] The band's early musical influences included Napalm Death, Black Sabbath, Death and Morbid Angel. The band recorded their first demo tape Accelerated Decrepitude in 1991. It contained tracks that would all later be released again as a 7" record under the title Adipocere in 1992 through Seraphic Decay Records.
The group were signed to JL America in 1992 and released their first full-length album Ritual of Infinity the same year. Composed of tracks recorded during different sessions, [4] the album was released under the band name Morpheus Descends—the first recording by the group to be released under that name. It was also the first recording by the group to feature vocalist Jeff Riemer, who had joined the group after Campbell left. According to Yench, the band name change was made at the request of JL America, since an electronic group with the name Morpheus already existed. [1] [3] The ensuing tour for the album was financed and booked by the band themselves. [1]
The group independently released the extended play Chronicles of the Shadowed Ones in 1994 which Yench described as "much darker and more doom-laden". [3] For this recording, the band spent extra time in studio, as opposed to the "rushed" time schedule they had with their previous recordings. [1] Chronicles of the Shadowed Ones is the only release by the group to feature guitarist Bryan Johnston, who replaced Steve Hanson when he left the group after the release of Ritual of Infinity. It is also the last album by the group to feature vocalist Jeff Riemer. The group issued their third extended play The Horror of the Truth in 1997 through Angel Dust Records, the only release by the group to feature vocalist/guitarist Tom Stevens and bassist Andy Newton. [5] The group eventually broke up in 1998 due to creative differences, personal issues, and an overall lack of interest in the project. [1] [5]
After the band's break-up in 1998, members of the group went on to work on other projects. Both Stevens and Yench would go on to perform in Incantation. [6] Yench is currently a member of the groups Mausoleum, Typhus, and Engorge. Inzerra plays in the bands Mortician and Funerus [3] and was at one point a member of the crossover thrash group Generation Kill. [6] Faggio plays in Rooms of Ruin and Cabal 34. [3] Andy Newton joined the black metal band Fog under the nickname "Lord Typhus Mirinor". [6]
Former vocalist Jeff Riemer died on August 30, 2005, of a heroin overdose. [1] [6] [7] [8]
The band performed their first show since their break-up in 1998 with a lineup consisting of founding members Yench, Inzerra, Faggio and Campbell, and newly recruited guitarist Ed Winners in 2013. [1] The idea to reunite was one that had stuck with the band since their initial dissolution. [2] However, it was not until 2012 when Inzerra and Yench met at Maryland Deathfest when the idea was taken seriously. [9] To celebrate the band's 25th anniversary in 2015, Dark Descent Records released the three-disc anthology box set From Blackened Crypts that contained the band's entire recorded discography, a DVD Visage of Malady containing live footage and interviews, and two newly recorded tracks. [1] The two new tracks, "Oozing of the Urn" and "The King's Curse", were released as their own separate 7" record that same year under the same name. Webzine Metal Rules named From Blackened Crypts as the best box set of 2015. [10] The 7" was mentioned in Death Metal Undereground's "Best Albums of 2015" feature. [11]
The group has been touring regularly since their reunion and have announced plans to write and record more new material in the future. [8]

Manowar is an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York. Formed in 1980, the group is known for lyrics based on fantasy and mythology, as well as numerous songs celebrating the genre and its core audience. The band is also known for a loud and emphatic sound. In an interview for MTV in February 2007, bassist Joey DeMaio lamented that "these days, there's a real lack of big, epic metal that is drenched with crushing guitars and choirs and orchestras... so it's nice to be one of the few bands that's actually doing that". In 1984, the band was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for delivering the loudest performance, a record which they have since broken on two occasions. They also hold the world record for the longest heavy metal concert after playing for five hours and 1 minute in Bulgaria in 2008. They also have been known for their slogan "Death to false metal". The band maintains a strong cult following.
At the Gates is a Swedish death metal band from Gothenburg, formed in 1990. The band was a major progenitor of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal alongside In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Prior to their first disbandment in 1996, At the Gates released four albums, ending with and including Slaughter of the Soul (1995), which has been seen as a landmark in the mid-1990s Swedish death metal scene. After reuniting for a one-off tour in 2008, the band reformed once again in 2011, and they have since released three more albums: At War with Reality (2014), To Drink from the Night Itself (2018) and The Nightmare of Being (2021).
Machine Head is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Robb Flynn, who remains the only original member of the band. Machine Head's aggressive musicianship made it one of the pioneering bands in the new wave of American heavy metal. Its current lineup comprises Flynn, bassist Jared MacEachern, lead guitarist Wacław Kiełtyka and drummer Matt Alston. Bassist Adam Duce, lead guitarists Logan Mader, Ahrue Luster and Phil Demmel, and drummers Tony Costanza, Chris Kontos and Dave McClain are former members of the band; Mader and Kontos toured with the band in 2019 and 2020 as part of the 25th anniversary tour for its first album, Burn My Eyes (1994).
Fleshcrawl is a German death metal band formed in Illertissen, Bavaria, in 1987. Their most recent album, Into the Catacombs of Flesh, was released in 2019 under Apostasy Records.
Electric Wizard are an English doom metal band from Dorset. The band formed in 1993 and have recorded nine studio albums, two of which have been considered genre landmarks: Come My Fanatics… (1997) and Dopethrone (2000). Electric Wizard's brand of doom metal incorporates stoner and sludge traits, with lyrics focusing on the occult, witchcraft, H. P. Lovecraft, horror films and cannabis. In 2014 they formed Witchfinder Records, an imprint of Spinefarm Records, on which they plan to release all future albums.
Dying Fetus is an American death metal band originally from Greater Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Formed in 1991, the group is known for their consistently hook-laden song structures, characterized by blast beats, complex riffing, slam riffs and heavy breakdowns. Additionally, their reality-based lyrics characterized by political/modern themes are notable in death metal. Various line-up changes throughout the years have left John Gallagher as the sole remaining original member, as well as the band's driving force. According to Gallagher, the band name was chosen while the members were of adolescent ages and was intended to be offensive. To date, Dying Fetus has released eight studio albums.
William Geoffrey Steer is a British guitarist and co-founder of the extreme metal band Carcass. He is considered a pioneer and an essential contributor to grindcore and death metal due to his involvement in Napalm Death and Carcass, two of the most important bands of those genres. Presently he plays with Gentlemans Pistols, the reactivated Carcass and appeared as a live second guitarist for Angel Witch from 2011–2015.
Exodus is an American thrash metal band formed in 1979 in Richmond, California. Their current lineup consists of guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus, bassist Jack Gibson, drummer Tom Hunting, and lead vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza. There are no original members left in Exodus other than Hunting, who has departed from the band twice, in 1989 and 2004, but rejoined in 2007. Exodus is also notable for its inclusion of guitarist Kirk Hammett in its initial lineup; he eventually left the band in 1983 to join Metallica as Dave Mustaine's replacement. Holt, who replaced original guitarist Tim Agnello in 1981, has been most consistent member throughout various lineup changes and break-ups, and is the only member to be present on each Exodus release. Much of the band's career has also been affected by bitter feuds between both band members and record companies, two extended hiatuses, deaths of former band members and internal problems often relating to drugs.
Hecate Enthroned are an English symphonic black metal band initially founded with members from both Wales and England, but are no primarily based around Cheshire, England. The band formed in 1993 as a blackened death metal act under the name Amethyst, changing their name to Daemonum later on. By 1995 the band had adopted the name Hecate Enthroned and a symphonic black metal style.
Vital Remains is an American death metal band from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 1988.
Nocturnus, currently Nocturnus AD, is an American death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987 by drummer/vocalist Mike Browning. They were known for their science-fiction themed lyrics and use of keyboards, both of which were virtually unknown in extreme metal at the time. The 1990 debut from the band is considered by some to be the first progressive death metal album.
Razor is a Canadian speed metal band formed in 1983 at Guelph, Ontario. They are recognized as the pioneers of Canadian thrash metal and have been referred to as one of the country's "big four", alongside Sacrifice, Voivod and Annihilator.
Sacramentum is a melodic black metal band from Falköping, Sweden, formed by Nisse Karlén (vocals/guitar) in the summer of 1990 under the name of Tumulus. The band released three full-length studio albums and two demos. They are best known for their debut album Far Away from the Sun, which is often considered one of the best early melodic black metal releases.

Defeated Sanity is a German technical death metal band from Dachsbach, Bavaria that was conceived in 1993 by guitarist Wolfgang Teske and his son, drummer Lille Gruber. The group's lineup currently consists of Gruber (drums), Josh Welshman (vocals), and Jacob Schmidt. The band is known for their very brutal, abrasive and intricate style of death metal, while at the same time maintaining almost jazz fusion style influences. Defeated Sanity's genre has also sometimes been categorized as progressive death metal.
Far Away from the Sun is the debut album of the Swedish black metal band Sacramentum. It was released through Adipocere Records in May 1996. The album features cover artwork created by Kristian "Necrolord" Wåhlin. The album's style has been compared to contemporaries such as Dissection and Unanimated, and the album is frequently considered an often-overlooked classic in the genre.
Dead by Wednesday is an American heavy metal band from New Haven, Connecticut, formed in 2006. The band's current lineup includes founding members Christian "Opus" Lawrence (drums) and Michael Modeste (bass), along with Dave Sharpe (guitar) and Steve Alvarez (vocals).
Immortal Bird is an American blackened death metal band made up of Rae Amitay, John Picillo, Nate Madden and Matt Korajczyk. They are from Chicago, Illinois. Their music is influenced by grindcore, progressive metal, and post-metal. The band was formed in 2013 with the intention of being a recording project, but has evolved into an actively touring and collaborative group.
Ritual of Infinity is the first studio album by American death metal band Morpheus Descends. It was released in late 1992 through JL America. The album was reissued on compact disc in 2005 through Spanish independent label Xtreem Music along with the entire Adipocere extended play. The Crypt reissued the album on vinyl for the first time on black, blue, and clear vinyl in 2015. It is the first album by the group to feature vocalist Jeff Riemer as well as their last to include guitarist Steve Hanson.
