The Moscow International Championships was a men's and women's open international outdoor tennis tournament founded in 1956. [1] The tournament was organised by the Tennis Federation of the USSR was played on clay courts in Moscow, Soviet Union until 1975.

The event also carried the joint denomination of USSR International Championships. [1] The championships were part ILTF European Circuit a sub circuit of the ILTF World Circuit until 1972 then became part of the ILTF Independent Tour from 1973 until it was discontinued. [1]

History

In the mid-1950s confrontational relations between the Western Bloc and Soviet Union eased in part the Khrushchev Thaw a policy of de-Stalinization by then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, [2] meant that Soviet players were free to travel to overseas international tournaments, while foreign players could take part in a limited number of tournaments within the USSR, mainly in the capital Moscow.

The two prominent international tournaments for foreign players to participate in were the Moscow International Indoor Championships or (USSR International Indoor Championships) usually late winter in February to early spring in March. [1] The second international tennis event was Moscow International Championships usually staged in the summer at the end of July, beginning of August and was played on clay courts. [1] Additionally two closed tournaments were also held in Moscow for Soviet players only the Moscow Indoor Championships and the Moscow Outdoor Championships. [1]

The U.S. Pro Indoor (mainly known as such during its run, but formally as the U.S. Professional Indoor Championships, is a defunct professional tennis tournament founded in 1962 as the Philadelphia Invitational Indoor Tennis Championships. The tournament was held in Philadelphia, United States from 1962 to 1998. It played on indoor carpet courts, and indoor hard courts. It was part of the ILTF World Circuit from 1962 to 1967 and again in 1970, the World Championship Tennis circuit in 1968, 1969 and from 1971 to 1977 and the Grand Prix Tour from 1978 to 1989 before being held on the ATP Tour. It was held annually first at the Spectrum, and then at the CoreStates Center. It was originally named the Philadelphia Indoor Open Tournament prior to the open era.

The Virginia Slims of Fort Lauderdale is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated women's tennis tournament founded in 1946 as a combined men's and women's event called the Austin Smith Championships that was part of the ILTF Circuit. The tournament played at the Fort Lauderdale Tennis Club from 1946 to 1974. It was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the United States and played on outdoor clay courts.

The 1975 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit administered by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) which served as a forerunner to the current Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. The circuit consisted of the four modern Grand Slam tournaments and open tournaments recognised by the ILTF. The Commercial Union Assurance Masters, Davis Cup Final and Nations Cup are included in this calendar but did not count towards the Grand Prix.

The Moroccan International Championships or Championnats Internationaux Marocains was a men's and women's international clay court tennis tournament founded in 1925 as the Moroccan Championships or Championnats du Maroc. The tournament first held in Casablanca, Morocco. It was held annually until 1974 when it was discontinued as part of the worldwide ILTF Circuit.

The New Hampshire State Championships, also called the New Hampshire Championships, was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1895 as a sanctioned event of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association. It was first held at the Center Harbor LTC, Center Harbor, New Hampshire, United States. The tournament was held in conjunction with the White Mountains Tennis Championships from 1905 to 1950.
