Politics of Bangladesh takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Constitution of Bangladesh was written in 1972,and has undergone seventeen amendments.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. Founded on 1 September 1978 by the late Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman,with a view to uniting people with a nationalist ideology,BNP later became one of the two dominant parties in Bangladesh,along with its archrival Awami League. Initially a big tent centrist party,it later moved towards more right-wing politics.
Bangladesh elects on national level a legislature with one house or chamber. The unicameral Jatiyo Sangshad,meaning national parliament,has 350 members of which 300 members are directly elected through a national election for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies while 50 memberships are reserved for the women who are selected by the ruling party or coalition. The Prime Minister is the head of the government. The president who is the head of the state is elected by the National Parliament. The president of Bangladesh is a ceremonial post and does not exercise any control over the running of the state.
Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician,minister and six-term member of Jatiya Sangsad and member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee,who served as the adviser of parliamentary affairs to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in from 2001 to 2006. On 1 October 2013 he was convicted of 9 of 23 charges and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh for crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence. However,limitations placed on his defense testimony were called "disturbing" and the trial was politically motivated.
Wadud Bhuiyan is a Bangladeshi politician. Bhuiyan was elected twice as the member of the Jatiya Sangsad from Khagrachari constituency respectively in the 6th and 8th National Parliamentary Elections. In addition,he served as Chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board from 2002 to 2006. He currently holds the posts of assistant employment secretary of Central Executive Committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and president of the opposition party's Khagrachari local unit as well.
Mohammad Fazlul Azim is a Bangladeshi industrialist,business magnate and former politician. He is the chairman of Azim Group,a leading industrial conglomerate and exporter in Bangladesh with business concerns in Garments,Steel,Engineering,Agro and various other sectors. He last served as an independent member of parliament of the Jatiya Sangsad. Azim was the only independent lawmaker in the parliament during the 9th Jatiya Sangsad. He also served in the parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Abdul Moyeen Khan is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician. He is a member of the current standing committee of the party. He served as the minister of state for planning,government of Bangladesh during 1993–1996,minister of information during 2001–2002 and the minister of science and information &communication technology during 2002–2006. He served as a member of the Bangladesh Parliament from 1991 until 2006.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is a standing committee member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party,and former minister of commerce. He hails from a political family in Chittagong and headed the city's BNP unit momentarily to organize the party.
Abdullah Al Noman is a Bangladeshi politician who is a vice-chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He is a 3-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency. He served as a minister of fisheries and food in the second Khaleda Cabinet.
