The Mother Rudd House is the oldest building in Warren Township and one of the oldest in both Lake County and Illinois. Completed in 1843, the building serves as the home for the Warren Township Historical Society.
The connected inn was built in 1841, making it the oldest structure in the Township. The two-story home was completed in 1843 as a stage coach stop for travelers to barter and trade. [1] Originally named the O'Plain House, the land was purchased by Wealthy Buell and Jonathan Harvey, where they would open their temperance tavern that same year. Only 4 years after the establishment of Lake County. [2] After Jonathan passed away in January 1845, Wealthy married Erastus Rudd in 1846. When Warren Township was formed in 1850 the building served as a local town hall, post office, and general store. Being the most popular gathering spot in town, Wealthy over time became known as "Mother Rudd." [3] Before, during, and after the Civil War, it is said that the Mother Rudd Barn (located behind the house) served as a stop for escaped slaves traveling along the Underground Railroad. [4] Its location was optimal as it is only 100 feet from the Des Plaines River. All that remains of the barn is the stone foundation. Mother Rudd passed away on August 8, 1880. She was buried in Warren Cemetery two miles west of the home.
The Warren Township Historical Society was established in 1975. The three acre property was purchased by the Village of Gurnee in 1984 and underwent a large renovation that was completed in 1991. [5] Exactly 150 years after the inn was first built. As of 2018, the WTHS has ownership of 27,000 local artifacts.

The Garfield Farm and Inn Museum is a Registered Historic Place in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The property is a 375-acre (1.52 km2) farmstead, centered on an inn that served teamsters and the nearby community during the 1840s. It is currently a museum offering a variety of educational and entertainment events. The buildings that remain are three original 1840s structures, including the 1842 hay and grain barn, the 1849 horse barn, and the 1846 inn. The Galena–Chicago trail was a stagecoach route located in northern Illinois that ran from the mid-to-late 1830s until 1854. As indicated by its name, the route linked Chicago, located in the northeast of the state, with Galena which was located in the lead mining district of the northwest. The Chicago-Galena trail includes the "Stagecoach Trail" that runs between Galena and Lena, Illinois. East of Lena the stage route follows U.S. Route 20 and Business U.S. Route 20 through Eleroy, Freeport and Rockford to Belvidere. This road began as the old State Road number 2 established on 15 January 1836 and laid out by June 1837.
The Marcus Curtiss Inn is a historic house and post office located near Galena in Genoa Township, Delaware County, Ohio, United States. A native of Connecticut, Curtiss moved to present-day Genoa Township in 1808, becoming the first settler in the area, along with his family, his brother's family, and a third family who also moved from Connecticut. Here, he established himself on 681 acres (276 ha) of land and began to farm; part of his land was very clayey, and Curtiss decided to start a brickworks on the site. Although he left home to serve in the War of 1812, he returned to modern Delaware County after the war and resumed construction on the present house.
