Moulvibazar Government High School is a secondary school in Moulvibazar, Bangladesh. It was established in 1891. [1]
Middle English School was established in Moulvibazar town in June 1885 during the British Raj. [2] In 1891, it became a High School. [2] The school was funded by advocate Harakinker Das and the Gupta family. [2] The first headmaster of the school was Dijendra Nath Niogee. [2] In 1899, Sharat Chandra Chaudhury was appointed the second headmaster of the school. [2] Chaudhury was fired for writing against colonial rule of the British Raj. [2] In 1914, the government of Assam nationalized the school and renamed as Moulvibazar Government High School. The nationalisation was followed by expansion of the school through the acquisation of land for building new hostels. [2]
In 1930, J. R. Cunningham, Director of Public Instruction of Assam, issued a circular banning Anti-British activities, independence movement, and forced students and parents to sign undertaking declaring they would participate in those activities. [2] [3] The school was burned down in protests against the circular. [2] The entrance examination center for Moulvibazar (South Sylhet mahakuma) was in Sylhet until 1938. In 1933, the school was approved as a center for entrance examination.[ citation needed ] After the end of the Bangladesh Liberation War, the school was used as a transit camp to store explosives and ammunitions left from the war. [4] On 20 December 1971, the storage at the school exploded. 25 bodies of Mukti Bahini personnel were recovered from the school but the death toll was believed to be higher. [4] [5] They were buried in the playground of the school. [6] A shaheed Minar and a monument to the victims was built at the site of the explosion. [4] 20 December is observed as Moulvibazar's Shaheed Day. [4] [7]
In 2001, alumni of the school Saifur Rahman became the Finance Minister of Bangladesh and constructed a number of buildings for the school. [2] In 2009, Rahman's Funeral prayer was held at the school. [8]
In October 2016, students of school protested against the Education Engineering Department plan to establish a zonal office on land of the school which was used by the students as a playground. [9]
On 8 December 2017, a student of the school and another of Moulvibazar Government College was killed in an attack by a rival fraction of Bangladesh Chhatra League on school grounds. [10] [11] Moulvibazar police declared a bounty on five suspects worth 50,000 BDT each. [12]
The results of educational programs are always traditional in this school.[ clarification needed ] The school ranked among the top 20 schools of Sylhet Board in SSC examination 2014. [13]

Sylhet Division is the northeastern division of Bangladesh. It is bordered by the Indian states of Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura to the north, east and south respectively, and by the Bangladeshi divisions of Chittagong to the southwest and Dhaka and Mymensingh to the west. Prior to the Partition in 1947, it included Karimganj subdivision. However, Karimganj was inexplicably severed from Sylhet by the Radcliffe Boundary Commission. According to Niharranjan Ray, it was partly due to a plea from a delegation led by Abdul Matlib Mazumdar.

Amanullah Mohammad Asaduzzaman was an East Pakistani student activist whose death at the hands of police during a protest on 20 January 1969 "changed the nature of the student-mass movement and ... turned into a mass-upsurge against the Ayub regime and its repressive measures", according to Banglapedia. The Daily Star reports him as one of three martyrs of the 1969 uprising in East Pakistan which "set the stage for the liberation war". He was awarded the Independence Day Award in 2018 posthumously by the Government of Bangladesh.
Dewan Farid Gazi was a Bangladeshi politician born in Devpara, Nabiganj Upazila, Sylhet. He was elected as member of parliament for the Habiganj-1 (Nabigonj-Bahubal) constituency in 1996, 2001 and 2008, representing the Awami League, of which he was an advisory council member. He served as chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
The Sylheti or Sylhetis are an Indo-Aryan ethnocultural group that are associated with the Sylhet region. There are strong diasporic communities in Barak Valley of Assam, India, North Tripura, as well as in rest of Bangladesh and northeast India. They speak Sylheti, an Eastern Indo-Aryan language that is considered "a distinct language by many and a dialect of Bengali by some others".
The 1947 Sylhet referendum was held in the Sylhet District of the Assam Province of British India to decide whether the district would remain in Undivided Assam and therefore within the post-independence Dominion of India, or leave Assam for East Bengal and consequently join the newly-created Dominion of Pakistan. The referendum's turnout was in favour of joining the Pakistani union; however, the district's Karimganj subdivision remained within the Indian state of Assam.
