Mount Albert-Ponsonby is a semi-professional association football club in Mount Albert, Auckland, New Zealand.

History

The club is an amalgamated between Mount Albert FC and Ponsonby in 1971. [1] Ponsonby had previously won the Chatham Cup, New Zealand's premier knockout tournament, in 1927 [2] and 1933. [3]

The club won play-off series to earn a place in the 1971 National Soccer League. [4] The team were briefly known, during their second season in the league, as Auckland City FC after getting support from Eden AFC [5] [6] [Note 1]

Present day

Mount Albert-Ponsonby current home ground is Anderson Park, Mt Albert, Auckland. The team's current kit colours are Blue with a Gold trim for the home kit, and Red for the away kit.

The New Zealand National League is the name given to the current New Zealand top football competition. Originally set up as the New Zealand National Soccer League there has been many versions of the competition as well as many different names. The most common format saw club teams play each other, at least two times, on a home and away basis. At the completion of those games, the best-performing team was declared as the New Zealand champion. The latest version has the clubs play in their regional leagues with the top teams qualifying for the Championship phase to then play each other for the champion.

The Auckland Rugby League competition has been competed for since 1909 when the first organised match was played between North Shore and City Rovers. The league was expanded at the end of the inaugural season, so there was no relegation from the 1970 league season. Hungaria, who had competed in the inaugural season, combined with Miramar Rangers to form a new composite league team, Wellington City. Though Miramar withdrew from the team after the 1971 season, the team continued to use the new name.

The 2016 Chatham Cup was New Zealand's 89th annual knockout football competition.
