Background

"Mr. Solitaire" was the fourth single for Animal Nightlife. It was released in July, 1984. Making the Top 30 chart, it was also the first real success the group had and it got them their first appearance on Top of the Pops. [1] The song was written by Roy Carter who also handled the arrangements. [2] Michael Brauer produced the recording. [3] The B side of the single was "Lazy Afternoon". [4]

The song appears on the Video Music 3 compilation that was released in 1984. [5]

Chart

The single made its debut at no 51 in the No 1! Next 25 chart on the week of September 8, 1984. [6] The following week it had dropped off of the Next 25 chart, [7] but it debuted at no. 24 in the magazine's Disco / Dance Singles chart. [8] [9] On the week of September 22, it was back in the Next 25 chart at no. 56. [10] It was also at no. 20 on the Disco / Dance Singles chart. [11] It debuted in the no. 42 in the No. 1 U.K. Singles chart on the week of September 29. [12] On the week of October 13, 1984, the single peaked at no. 24 on the No 1! magazine U.K. Singles chart. [13] [14] At that week, it was also at no. 18 on the magazine's Disco / Dance Singles chart. [15]

Roy Carter is an English musician, songwriter and music producer. He has written or co-written hits for Instant Funk, Central Line, Animal Nightlife, David Grant, and Jermaine Stewart. He has also been a member of groups, Clem Curtis & The Foundations, Heatwave, Central Line and Danny D. & Collusion. In later years he ran a television music production company.

Linda Taylor is a performing singer, recording artist and songwriter. She had success with her hits with "(You're) in the Pocket", "You and Me Just Started" and "Every Waking Hour". She also sang lead on the hit "Roberto Who?" which was credited to Cayenne featuring Linda Taylor. She was once a member of Gonzalez. She is also one of the UK's top session singers. Her career has seen her working with acts such as Morrissey–Mullen.
