Msheireb Museums is a project by Msheireb Properties which celebrates the histories of four historic heritage houses in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha, the capital city of Qatar. [1]

Msheireb Museums are an integral part of the inner city's regeneration of the old commercial centre, with its traditional community-based lifestyle. The restoration of the four heritage houses—Bin Jelmood House, Company House, Mohammed Bin Jassim House and Radwani House—into world-class museums is a vital part of the Msheireb Downtown Doha development.

During the FIFA World Cup 2022, the primary celebration area for the Qatari National Team was located in the Heritage Zone of the museum. The museum also hosted events and exhibitions during the world cup. [2] [3]

In May 2023 the museum organized several events like a book signing or an exhibit of 3D printed building models around the International Museums Day. [4] The museum is host to talks and lectures like the 'Earth Talk Series' [5] or a TEDx Talk in 2023. [6]

The Msheireb Museums are part of the first phase of the Heritage Quarter of Msheireb Properties’ QR20 billion (US$5.5 billion), 310,000 sq m development. [7] The museum was also included in the 2018 world's best new buildings list of the Royal Institute of British Architects. [8]

Houses

Bin Jelmood House

Bin Jelmood House charts the history of the global slave trade, particularly in the Indian Ocean region, and the changes caused by its abolition. [9] [7] [10]

Certain sections of the house are dedicated to the narration of the trade in enslaved people throughout the Indian Ocean, a vast region of which the countries of the Persian Gulf are a part of. Additionally, the house sheds light on the historic importation of slaves from Zanzibar to dive for pearls on behalf of their Qatari owners. [11]

Company House

This house recounts the history of the pioneering petroleum industry workers and their families whose work helped to transform Qatar. [12] [7] The house also hosts exhibitions like "Strange Wonders" in 2016, featuring artworks from ten alumni of the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), [13] or "We are the Daughters of Qatar" in 2018. [14]

Mohammed Bin Jassim House

Originally built by Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, the son of the Qatar's founder, the Mohammed bin Jassim House focuses on the past, present and sustainable elements of the vast Msheireb Downtown Doha. It also houses the Echo Memory Art Project using objects uncovered during demolition of the site. [15] [16]

An exhibition called "Medhal: The Roots of Authenticity Extends... To Leave Generations as Art" was opened at the house in March 2023, displaying artworks from minors and employees of the house. [17]

Radwani House

The Radwani House was first built in the 1920s. This house is located between Al Jasrah and Msheireb, two of Doha's oldest quarters. [18] [19]

A purpose-built park surrounds the edifice on the eastern and southern facades while two bridges connect the southern front facade of the property with the main peninsula that holds the park. The western and northern facades are marked by the harbor showcasing the Qatari seafaring past. In September 2017, Qatar Museums appointed Julia Gonnella as new director of MIA. In November 2022 the MIA became the first carbon-neutral certified museum in the Middle East Region. The museum participates in the Expo 2023 Doha from October 2023 until March 2024, with workshops and events focusing on biodiversity and sustainability.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is a Quatari museum in Doha. The museum has a collection of over 9,000 objects and has temporary exhibitions, a library, and an educational program. Established in 2010, it is considered a major cultural attractions in the country.

The QM has an ambitious plan that aims to make Qatar a world class cultural destination, notably in modern and contemporary art.

Events in the year 2021 in Qatar.

The Fire Station in Doha, Qatar, is a former base for the Qatari Civil Defense Authority repurposed for the Artists in Residence programme of the Qatar Museums. Khalifa Al Obaidli is the director and Saida Al Khulaifi is the head of programmes and exhibitions. On 4 April 2023, the Fire Station held its first public event for Garangao night which was open to people of all ages.

The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum is the first sports related museum in the Middle East. It focuses on the history of both domestic and international sports and officially opened to the public on 30 March 2022 through an inauguration ceremony held by Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The museum was designed by Spanish Architect Joan Sibina, measures 19,000 square meters and is connected to the Khalifa International Stadium. The museum is partners with the International Physical Literacy Association and Accessible Qatar. It received over 100,000 visitors in its first 8 months after opening.
