Mukta Venkatesh (1902-2003) was an Indian painter. She is best known for her intricate floral paintings. [1]

Life

Mukta Venkatesh was born as Muthulakshmi in Madras, Tamil Nadu in 1902. Her parents Meenakshi and A. Madhaviah, were committed to various social causes and her father was a well-known author in Tamil and English. As a child, she was influenced by her father's passion for literature and progressive views. [2] She was the fourth of the eight children, and she was taught by her father for most of her early life, since they lived along the Coromandel Coast where schools were sparse. Her family survived the influenza pandemic of 1917. [2] Later, she married M. Venkatesh who worked for the Mysore Railways, and had two daughters.

Career

Mukta Venkatesh's art-work contains unique and elaborate floral patterns. While she initially painted outdoor landscapes, Venkatesh later shifted her focus to flowers, since travelling outdoors got harder with age [3] She is also well-known for her skill with embroidery and needle-work. Venkatesh regularly painted even late into her life, and has described painting as a deeply meditative practice: "When I paint I am very happy. I am lost in the effort of how to produce on paper my impression of what I see. So the household problems are kept at bay." [3]

He was popularly referred to as Maasti Kannadada Aasti which means "Maasti, Kannada's Treasure". He is most renowned for his short stories. He wrote under the pen name Srinivasa. He was honoured with the title Rajasevasakta by then Maharaja of Mysore Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadeyar.

Anne Vallayer-Coster was a major 18th-century French painter best known for still lifes. She achieved fame and recognition very early in her career, being admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1770, at the age of twenty-six.

Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, also known mononymously as Bharathi, is an Indian actress known primarily for her work in Kannada cinema and television serials. She began her career in 1966, as a lead actress, with the Kannada movie Love in Bangalore. In a career spanning over 50 years, Bharathi has appeared in 150 films. Jayaram Jayalalithaa was an Indian politician, actress and philanthropist who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for more than fourteen years over six terms between 1991 and 2016. From 9 February 1989, she was the general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a Dravidian party whose cadre revered her as their "Amma" (Mother) and "Puratchi Thalaivi". Ballary M. Raghavendra Musical artist

Vidwan Ballary M Raghavendra is a Carnatic vocalist from Karnataka. He has a bachelor's degree in commerce and also a Master's degree in music from Bangalore University. He has served in various capacities across multiple All India Radio stations in Karnataka. Initially joining as a program executive, he later went on to become the Assistant Station Director in AIR. He had the rare privilege of being an A grade artist in devotional and light classical forms of music apart from Carnatic classical music. He is popularly known for delivering music compositions with lyrical clarity, emotion and good use of rhythmic patterns After his retirement from AIR, he is currently living in Mysore.

Victoria Dubourg French painter

Victoria Dubourg or Victoria Fantin-Latour was a French still life painter.

Y.G. Srimati 20th century musician, dancer and painter born in Mysore, India. From a very young age, she was trained in Indian classical music, dance and painting. Y.G. Srimati became a highly accomplished vocalist and performer of Carnatic music and became a participant of the Indian Independence Movement from Chennai. She was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and at rallies addressed by him she would perform devotional songs in various Indian languages. She dedicated her art work to nationalist themes, often painting figures from Hindu mythology, her style being influenced by Nandalal Bose of the Bengal School of Art and the frescoes of the Ellora and Ajanta Caves. Her talent was recognized in 1952 during her first solo exhibition at the Government Museum, Madras.

Evelina "Nina" Mount (1837–1920) was a 19th-century American female artist. Born in Stony Brook, New York in 1837, as a daughter of an artist, Evelina was introduced to art at an early age by her father, Henry Mount, and her paternal uncles, Shepard Alonzo Mount and William Sidney Mount, with the latter being her mentor for the first three decades of her life. She is best known for her floral still-lifes and landscapes.
