Mukti (newspaper)

Mukti was one of the important weekly [1] newspaper of Purulia of West Bengal. It started publishing in 1925 from the Purulia town and later from the eastern manbhum district of then Bihar. It was published as a part of "Silpashram", a Gandhian Ashram. This newspaper has great importance in representing the local history from in its inception. [2]

Atul Chandra Ghosh (1881-1969) was a prominent personality of the Indian freedom movement from Purulia district, West Bengal. Born at Khandaghosh of Burdwan, he passed law in 1908. He was the co-founder of "Shilpashram" along with Nibaran Chandra Dasgupta. He was the chief architect of "Bangabhukti Andolon". He is famous in the title "Manbhum Keshari". He was active freedom fighter during British raj and he left practicing the law and joined freedom struggle during non-cooperation movement. He was the editor of weekly Bengali newspaper "Mukti". His wife, Labanya Prabha Ghosh was also a freedom fighter and continued as editor of Mukti after his death.

Labanya Prabha Ghosh (1897–2003), also called Labanya Devi, a Gandhian, was a prominent personality of the Indian freedom movement, from Purulia District of West Bengal. She lived for almost 106 years and during later part of her life, was forced to live in a poverty-stricken ashram, her only source of income being a pension paid for freedom fighters. All through her life, before and after independence of India, she fought for justice of common man.

The Mukti Bahini, also known as the Bangladesh Forces, was the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians during the Bangladesh Liberation War that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh in 1971. They were initially called the Mukti Fauj.

Purulia railway station serves Purulia City the headquarters of Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is situated at the eastern side of the city with railway owned colonies which is home for working staffs. The station is under NSG4 category.

The Lok Sewak Sangh, or Manbhum Lok Sewak Sangh, was a political party in Purulia District, West Bengal, India. LSS was founded in 1948. The party was the main political force in Purulia District from the independence of India until the fall of the second United Front cabinet.
