Multicultural organizational development

Multicultural organizational Development (MOD) has been posited as a useful model for facilitating comprehensive long-term change for divisions of student affairs committed to transforming themselves into multicultural organizations. [1] Is one that has a workforce that includes people from diverse backgrounds across all departments, and which offers them equal opportunity for input and advancement within the company. A multicultural organization also possesses an absence of discrimination or prejudice toward people based on their race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, or physical limitation.

Acculturation

Acculturation are modes by which two groups adapt to each other and resolve cultural differences. [2] Acculturation include the cultural change while obtaining two cultures and to society. In working in a new environment you will begin to adapt form and change habit due to acculturation.

Structural Integration

Cultural profiles of organization members including hiring, job placement, and job status profiles. [2] Structural Integration has a workforce profile data has typically been monitored under traditional equal opportunity and affirmative action guidelines. Structural organization needs to be viewed widely across other ethnicity and work group to comprehend the organization. [2]

Informal Integration

Inclusion of minority culture members in informal networks and activities outside of normal working hours. [2] Informal integration also addresses mentoring and other informal developmental relationships in organizations. Informal organization complements the more explicit structures, plans, and processes of the formal organization. [2]

Cultural bias

Cultural bias has prejudice and discrimination. [2] Cultural bias is when you judge someone else's culture based on your own. For example, this is seen in Italy where they often take three-hour naps in the middle of the day. It would be an outrage if some businesses tried to start that in the United States. This relates to multiculturalism because bias is often one sided and Multiculturalism embraces cultures from across the globe.

Organizational identification

Feelings of belonging, loyalty, and commitment to the organization. [2] Organizational identification is how much a person defines themselves as part of an organization they are a part of. It also refers to prosperity of the individual at the company. It relates to multiculturalism since at any organization there are bound to be a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds. Some might not consider their place in the organization as a top priority while others might. In the end it comes back to how they were raised and where work lies in the pecking order.

Intergroup conflict

Intergroup conflict is when there is a confrontation between two or more groups and their members, either between departments, companies, political parties or nations. This conflict can be psychological tension or physical violence. Conflict relates to multiculturalism because often different cultures are the ones that end up clashing. A prime example would be the United States and Soviet Union during the Cold War. They feel that capitalism and communism could not co-exist so then one must be eradicated. [2]

Cultural identity is a part of a person's identity, or their self-conception and self-perception, and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. Cultural identity is a fluid process that is changed by different social, cultural, and historical experiences. Some people undergo more cultural identity changes as opposed to others, those who change less often have a clear cultural identity. Those who change more, should be commended for seeing changes that need to be made in their life, for what fits them best. This means that they have a dynamic yet stable integration of their culture.

Cultural assimilation is the process in which a minority group or culture comes to resemble a society's majority group or assimilate the values, behaviors, and beliefs of another group whether fully or partially.

Interculturalism is a political movement that supports cross-cultural dialogue and challenging self-segregation tendencies within cultures. Interculturalism involves moving beyond mere passive acceptance of multiple cultures existing in a society and instead promotes dialogue and interaction between cultures. Interculturalism is often used to describe the set of relations between indigenous and western ideals, grounded in values of mutual respect.

The concept of race or ethnicity in contemporary Singapore emerged from the attitudes of the colonial authorities towards race and ethnicity. Before the early 2000s, the four major races in Singapore were the Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. Today, the Chinese-Malay-Indian-Others (CMIO) model is the dominant organising framework of race in Singapore. Race informs government policies on a variety of issues such as political participation, public housing and education. However, the state's management of race, as well as the relevance of the CMIO model, has been a point of contention amongst some in recent years.

Businesses benefit by having diversity in their work force. The business case for diversity stems from the progression of the models of diversity within the workplace since the 1960s. In the United States, the original model for diversity was situated around affirmative action drawing from equal opportunity employment objectives implemented in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Equal employment opportunity was centered around the idea that any individual academically or physically qualified for a specific job could strive for at obtaining the said job without being discriminated against based on identity. These initiatives were met with accusations that tokenism was the reason an individual was hired into a company when they differed from the dominant group. Dissatisfaction from minority groups eventually altered and/or raised the desire to achieve perfect employment opportunities in every job.

Multicultural education is a set of educational strategies developed to provide students with knowledge about the histories, cultures, and contributions of diverse groups. It draws on insights from multiple fields, including ethnic studies and women studies, and reinterprets content from related academic disciplines. It is a way of teaching that promotes the principles of inclusion, diversity, democracy, skill acquisition, inquiry, critical thought, multiple perspectives, and self-reflection. One study found these strategies to be effective in promoting educational achievements among immigrant students.

The interactive acculturation model (IAM) seeks to integrate within a common theoretical framework the following components of immigrants and host community relations in multicultural settings:

  1. acculturation orientations adopted by immigrant groups in the host community;
  2. acculturation orientations adopted by the host community towards special groups of immigrants;
  3. interpersonal and intergroup relational outcomes that are the product of combinations of immigrant and host community acculturation orientations.

Bicultural identity is the condition of being oneself regarding the combination of two cultures. The term can also be defined as biculturalism, which is the presence of two different cultures in the same country or region. As a general term, culture involves the behaviors and belief characteristics of a particular social, ethnic, or age group. Within culture, we have cultural effects, which are the shared behaviors and customs we learn from the institutions around us. An example of a cultural effect would be how an individual's personality is strongly influenced by the biological and social norms he is exposed to. Another cultural effect would be that in some societies it would be more acceptable to dress or act in a certain way.

Resistance to diversity efforts in organizations is a well-established and ubiquitous phenomenon that may be characterized by thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that undermine the success of diversity-related organizational change initiatives to recruit or retain diverse personnel. The use of such initiatives may be referred to as diversity management. Scholars note the presence of resistance to diversity before and after the civil rights movement; as pressures for diversity and social change increased in the 1960s, dominant group members faced workplace concerns over displacement by minorities.

Diversity ideology refers to individual beliefs regarding the nature of intergroup relations and how to improve them in culturally diverse societies. A large amount of scientific literature in social psychology studies diversity ideologies as prejudice reduction strategies, most commonly in the context of racial groups and interracial interactions. In research studies on the effects of diversity ideology, social psychologists have either examined endorsement of a diversity ideology as individual difference or used situational priming designs to activate the mindset of a particular diversity ideology. It is consistently shown that diversity ideologies influence how individuals perceive, judge and treat cultural outgroup members. Different diversity ideologies are associated with distinct effects on intergroup relations, such as stereotyping and prejudice, intergroup equality, and intergroup interactions from the perspectives of both majority and minority group members. Beyond intergroup consequences, diversity ideology also has implications on individual outcomes, such as whether people are open to cultural fusion and foreign ideas, which in turn predict creativity.

Racial-ethnic socialization describes the developmental processes by which children acquire the behaviors, perceptions, values, and attitudes of an ethnic group, and come to see themselves and others as members of the group.
