The murder of Rifat Sharif occurred in Barguna town in Bangladesh on 26 June 2019. [1] The murder investigation and the subsequent trial received blanket coverage in the press. [2]

Incident

On June 26, Sabbir Hossain Nayan alias Nayan Bond and Rifat Farazi, along with some others, attacked 25-year-old Rifat Sharif, an internet service provider, with sharp weapons in front of Barguna Government College in front of his wife Aysha Siddika Minni. A video clip of the attack, probably captured on a mobile phone, went viral on social media. His wife Ayesha pretended to save her husband from the attackers. Police later found out after investigation that the wife, Ayesha, is the mastermind behind the barbaric killing. Fatally injured Rifat was taken to Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (BSMCH) where doctors declared him dead. [3]

Trial

On 27 June 2019, Rifat's father Dulal Sharif filed a murder case accusing 12 persons. Police placed charge against Minni, and 23 others for their alleged involvement in the murder on 1 September 2019. The submitted charge sheet was divided into two segments, one for the 14 juveniles accused, and the other for the 10 adults accused. A total of 76 witnesses testified against the 10 accused in the court. The court indicted the 10 adult accused, including Minni, in the case on 1 January 2020. The trial of 14 minors accused in the murder case was started on 12 January 2020. [7] The accused in the case asked why Summan Debnath, son of Awami League Member of Parliament Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, was not an accused as they were following his instructions. [8]

District and Sessions Judge of Barguna sentenced six accused including Ayesha Siddika Minni to death in Rifat Sharif murder case on 30 September 2020. The court also acquitted four other accused in the verdict. [9]

Nabab LLB is a Bangladeshi legal drama film. The film is directed and written by Anonno Mamun, and produced by Azmat Hossain under the banner of Celebrity Production. It is a courtroom drama based on rape and violence against women. The film depicts the story of raped women protesting for their rights through social protests and judicial system. The film revolves around a rape victim Shuvra who is a radio jockey by profession, with Shakib Khan, who fought a legal battle in the court as her chief lawyer, Mahiya Mahi and Shahiduzzaman Selim played in the lead roles. The film soundtrack is composed by Dolaan Maainnakk, previously she collaborate with Khan in Bhaijaan Elo Re in 2018.

Khondkar Nazmul Huda was a veteran of the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Bangladesh government awarded him the title of Bir Bikrom for his bravery in the war of independence.

Delwoar Hossain was a 50-year-old Bangladeshi engineer who was murdered on May 11, 2020. His family members, coworkers, and various sources alleged Delwoar's stance against corruption was the motive behind the murder. Protesters demonstrated across the country demanding justice for Delwoar. Authorities claimed the murder happened because of a feud between coworkers which is refuted by the family of the victim. Various national organizations such as Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) demanded further investigation into the matter to ensure justice for the victim and his family.

The Bangladesh Chhatra League, formerly known as East Pakistan Student League, often simply called the Chhatra League, is a students' political organisation in Bangladesh. This student wing of the Bangladesh Awami League party has been repeatedly accused of using torture, extortion, violence, forced prostitution, and killings to instill fear. At least 33 people were killed and 1,500 got seriously injured from attacks by BSL between 2009 and 2014. Number of fatalities rose to 129 between 2014 and 2018 while 31 people were killed in 2018 alone.

Syed Nurul Islam is a deputy inspector general of the Bangladesh Police and is in charge of Dhaka Range. He is the former deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was the additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Division.

On 19 April 2022, Nahid Hossain, a courier delivery person, was beaten to death, during a clash between Dhaka College students and shopkeepers in the New Market area of Dhaka. The conflict, which began over a dispute at a local eatery, escalated into violent encounters involving students from the Bangladesh Chhatra League, resulting in several injuries. Following the incident, six Dhaka College students were identified as prime suspects, and the trial, which has drawn significant attention, is still ongoing as of mid-2023.

On 18 September 2024, Tofazzal Hossain was beaten to death by students at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall in the University of Dhaka. Accused of stealing cellphones, Hossain was subjected to severe physical violence which lead to his death.
