History
The school was named after Murdoch Mackay, a prominent politician, leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party, member of the provincial legislature and long-time Transcona resident. MacKay taught school in his hometown of Melville, Nova Scotia, before coming west and graduating from Manitoba Medical School in 1916.
When the building opened in September 1963, one year after his death, his wife, Ruby, attended the official dedication ceremony and laying of the cornerstone. The red brick structure opened with 22 rooms, but has undergone numerous expansions since, which have included the addition of Power Mechanics, Aerospace, and Fashion Technology vocational areas. Murdoch also offers a full range of Advanced Placement courses.
Academics overview
The school offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, including three tracks (basic, college preparatory, and Honors/AP) for all core academic courses. The school offers vocational diplomas in Power Mechanics, an accredited Metal Fabrication program (Level 1 Red Seal Machining, Level 1 Red Seal Tool & Die, certified CWB testing facility), Building Construction and Fashion Technology. In addition, the school offers a variety of elective courses from which to choose, allowing students much control in determining their course of study above and beyond the school's graduation requirements. Industrial Arts courses in Graphic Arts, Photography, Multimedia, Electronics and Woods are also offered as optional courses.
Athletics
Murdoch has a rich history of competitive and championship caliber athletic teams. Murdoch's biggest rivals include Transcona Collegiate Institute and Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau.
In 2001, the Murdoch MacKay hockey team won its final 8 games in a row, including a playoff game over rival and neighboring school Pierre Elliot Trudeau en route to a B-Side championship.
In the 2016–17 season Murdoch swept throughout the playoffs and won their second championship, the next year (2017-18) Murdoch became back-to-back champions again sweeping through the playoffs.
In 2010, the Murdoch Football Team won its first WHSFL Vidruk Division Championship with an 11 - 4 victory over the Kildonan East Reivers at Canad Inns Stadium.
In July 2020 as per an email with Murdoch's administrators and over 800 signatures on an online petition, It was announced that the Clansmen name was dropped and sports teams will now be known as Murdoch MacKay with all Clansmen references removed.
The Manitoba Bisons are the athletic teams that represent the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The football team plays their games at Princess Auto Stadium. The soccer team play their home games at the University of Manitoba Soccer Fields while the track and field teams use the University Stadium as their home track. The University has 18 different teams in 10 sports: basketball, curling, cross country running, Canadian football, golf, ice hockey, soccer, swimming, track & field, and volleyball.
Murdoch Mackay was a Manitoba politician. He led the Manitoba Liberal Party from 1931 to 1932, and brought the party into an alliance with John Bracken's Progressives.
River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) is a school division located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As the second largest school division in the province, it is composed of parts of what used to be two separate divisions that merged in 2002: the urban section of the Transcona-Springfield School Division; and the River East School Division.

Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute is located in Whitby, Ontario within the Durham District School Board. Established in 1960, the school has students in grades 9–12 and offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities. Anderson is the only high school in Whitby that offers the gifted program and thus acts as a magnet school, attracting students across the municipality. This program provides an enriched and accelerated curriculum for students in specific courses from grades 9–11. Anderson's feeder elementary schools are Bellwood Public School, C. E. Broughton Public School, Dr. Robert Thornton Public School, Pringle Creek Public School, and Jack Miner Public School.
Reginald Joseph Leach is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger who played 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers, and Detroit Red Wings between 1970 and 1983. He is best known for his time in Philadelphia, winning a Stanley Cup with the Flyers in 1975 and being a member of the LCB line.
The Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League (MMJHL) is a junior ice hockey league in Manitoba, Canada. Founded in 1970, the league was operated as an independent league. MMJHL affiliated with Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada in the mid-1990s. Teams compete annually for the Art Moug Trophy and Jack McKenzie Trophy.
Miles Macdonell Collegiate, sometimes referred to as Miles Mac, is a high school in Winnipeg, Manitoba that opened in September 1952 and is part of the River East Transcona School Division. Up until 2023, it was one of the six schools in Manitoba that participated in the International Baccalaureate Program, having announced its end in March of that year. The school offers classes in French Immersion geared towards university attendance in either official language. Miles Macdonell also offers the High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP), which is a program that allows students the opportunity to start an apprenticeship in the skilled trades prior to graduating.
Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau is part of River East Transcona School Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It opened its doors in September 1990 with a population of 140 students and 14 teachers. By 2006, the school had grown to 330 students and a staff of 21 teachers. In 2006, Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau was designated an unesco school. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation which there declared purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through educational, scientific, and cultural reforms in order to increase universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the United Nations Charter. It was the first and only public school that was approved by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau to be named after him.
Transcona Collegiate Institute (TCI) is a secondary education institution located in the Transcona suburb of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Transcona Collegiate teaches grades nine through twelve, with approximately 670 students and 60 staff members.
The Miami RedHawks are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, United States. Miami is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division and sponsors teams in nine men's and ten women's NCAA sanctioned sports; the RedHawks hockey team is a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The football team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level for college football. The Redhawks are arch-rivals with the Ohio Bobcats. In box scores for sporting events, the RedHawks sports teams are usually referred to as Miami (OH) to differentiate from the Miami Hurricanes, a Division I school in Florida.
John Murray Murdoch was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach. He played for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League from 1926 to 1937, never missing a game in his career. With the Rangers Murdoch won the Stanley Cup twice, in 1928 and in 1933. After his playing career he coached Yale University from 1938 to 1965.
