Murray Goodwin (born 16 January 1987) is an Australian athlete.

Personal life

Goodwin was born on the Gold Coast in Queensland. His father was a national level 800m runner. Goodwin completed a teaching degree at university and became a physical education teacher at Varsity College. [2]

Soccer career

Goodwin began playing soccer at the local level for Burleigh Heads in 2005 and regularly switched clubs, including stints with Merrimac, Mudgeeraba and Surfers Paradise. At his highest level, Goodwin played semi-professional soccer in 2010 for the Gold Coast Stars in the Queensland State League, one step below the professional A-League. [3] In 2012 he was a part of the undefeated Merrimac team that won the Gold Coast Premier League. [4]

Athletics career

Goodwin grew up competing in athletics events on the Gold Coast and set several city records in the process. He quit athletics in 2005 to focus on his university studies and began playing soccer. In 2014, at 27 years of age, Goodwin returned to athletics to have one last shot at a career in the sport. He began training with Currumbin Vikings beach sprint coach Brett Robinson who led fellow Gold Coaster Mitchell Williams to a 2011 Stawell Gift victory. In April 2015 Goodwin won the Stawell Gift, Australia's most prestigious foot race. His preferred event is the 400m sprint.

Athletics is a popular sport in Australia, with around 34,000 athletes, officials and coaches currently registered with the national association.

The Victorian Athletic League organises professional footrunning events ranging from 70 to 3200 metres. The most famous of these events is the Stawell Gift which has been run since 1878 and hosts the richest footrace in Australia. Many other gifts are held around Victoria in country and metro locations including Ballarat, Bendigo, Wangaratta, Maryborough, Keilor, Yarrawonga, Ringwood, Rye and Olympic Park. Races are run under a handicap system which makes races competitive. Each race has a different handicap limit. Generally, the greater the sum of the prize money for a race, the less handicap is available, limiting the class of runners that can win. Runners are awarded prize money when making finals and bookmaking occurs at major meets.

Eric James Cumming was an Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1940s.

Adam Coote is an Australian rules football boundary umpire and sprinter. He has umpired 383 games, including 31 final matches and five grand finals since making his debut in the 2005 season. In 2006 he was awarded the Bill Sutton Medallion for the best first or second year AFL boundary umpire. He continued to build on that early success and was the All Australian boundary umpire in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He was also awarded the Murray Williams Shield in 2012 for his contribution to the AFLUA and umpiring. Coote has umpired the third highest number of AFL games for a boundary umpire.

George McNeill is a Scottish former world professional sprint champion and the only man to have won both of the most famous professional footraces in the world – the New Year Sprint (1970) in Scotland and the Australian equivalent – the Stawell Gift (1981). McNeill had previously played professional football in the Scottish Football League for Hibernian, Greenock Morton and Stirling Albion.

Arthur Benjamin Postle was an Australian professional athlete, one of the country's most renowned sprinters in the early twentieth century. Born in Queensland and becoming a professional runner in 1902, Postle rose to prominence for the defeat of Beauchamp Day – then an Irish world champion – at Kalgoorlie in Western Australia in December 1906. Known thereafter as 'The Crimson Flash' for his coloured running costume, Postle also acquired the moniker "The Mighty Postle" for his defeat of Bill Growcott two years later in England, Growcott being England's champion runner. Postle's career took him throughout the United Kingdom and to New Zealand as well as across Australia, where he had a rivalry with fellow Australian champion Jack Donaldson.

The New Year Sprint is the name of a handicap sprint race for professional athletes that takes place each year in Scotland. The sprint is one of the original events of this type, tracing its history back to 1870.

David McKenzie Strickland was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). and was also a Stawell Gift winner in 1900.
