Mutare Polytechnic (also known as Mutare Poly) is a parastatal technical vocational education and training institution under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education of the government of Zimbabwe, it is located in Mutare, Manicaland Province. [1] [2] [3]

History

The institution was established in 1984 and was known as Umtali Technical College when it was formed. At its inception, the college operated as a satellite affiliate for Harare Polytechnic formerly Salisbury Technical College operating with just two divisions of Commerce and Engineering, right now the institution has six divisions with student enrolment of about 200 a year.

Divisions

Mutare Polytechnic has had three principals since its establishment, Auther Mandimika (1984 to 1988), Tobias Kuwengwa (1989 to 2014) and currently Poniso Watema.

In 2014, the institution won the best training institution of the year award 2014 in the Tourism and Hospitality sector at the Megafest Tourism Awards. [4] In 2018 the college was recognised in Gold category of the Arch of Europe Award for Quality and Technology. [5]

The university is known for its strength in science and engineering, and is one among a small group of technical schools or institutes of technology in Zimbabwe which are primarily devoted to the instruction of pure and applied sciences. The school was founded on the British polytechnic model offering standard and higher diplomas and undergraduate degrees, unlike European and American institutions which often offer postgraduate degrees and a strong emphasis on research. At the outset, the focus of polytechnics was on STEM subjects with a special emphasis on engineering.

Florida Polytechnic University

It was founded on October 19, 1904, as the Manila Business School (MBS) and as part of Manila's public school system. Adamawa State Polytechnic is a tertiary educational institution in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. It was established in 1991 through a merger of the College of Preliminary Studies Yola and the Staff Development Institute Numan. PolyU School of Hotel and Tourism Management

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) is one of the schools at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). It was established in 1979 as the Department of Institutional Management and Catering Studies, then renamed as Department of Hotel and Tourism Management in 1992. The department was designated a school in October 2001, which became an independent autonomous academic unit within the university structure in July 2004.

The Polytechnic, Ibadan Polytechnic in Ibadan, Nigeria

The Polytechnic, Ibadan is an institution of higher learning in Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria. Founded in 1970, Poly Ibadan is similar to other polytechnics in Nigeria. The institution was established to provide an alternative higher education to universities, particularly in technical skill acquisition. The vocational and skills acquisition centre is poised to ensure that students master a skill before leaving the institution and also provides skills training to the host community. The Polytechnic Ibadan is also well known for its unique slogan written in Yoruba language as "Ise loogun Ise" which means 'Work (is) the medicine for poverty', a classical Yoruba adage which stresses that hard work is the way out of poverty.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute

The State University of New York Polytechnic Institute is a public university with campuses in Marcy and Albany, New York. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Founded in 1966 using classrooms at a primary school, what became SUNY Poly is New York's public polytechnic college. The Marcy campus, formerly the SUNY Institute of Technology, has a Utica, New York mailing address and was established in 1987. The Albany campus was formerly a component of the University at Albany, and was established in January 2003.
