Alice Muthoni Gichuru, who writes as Muthoni wa Gichuru, is a Kenyan writer of fiction for children and young adults, as well as short stories. [1]

Life

Muthoni wa Gichuru grew up in Matanya, a small village in Nanyuki. As a child she recalls her father reading to her from a Gikuyu book titled Kamina na Kamina. [2] She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in information sciences from Moi University. [3]

Gichuru's husband, Joseph Kamau, encouraged her to start writing stories in 2002. [2] Her first published book, Breaking the Silence (2009), was runner-up for the 2011 Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature in the English-language youth category. [3] The Carving (2019) was the winner of the 2018 CODE Burt Prize for African Young Adult Literature in Kenya. [4]

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is a Kenyan writer and academic who writes primarily in Gikuyu. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children's literature. He is the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal Mũtĩiri. Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor Kenyan writer

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor is a Kenyan writer. She won the 2003 Caine Prize for African Writing for her story "Weight of Whispers", which considers an aristocratic Rwandan refugee in Kenya. The story was originally published in Kwani?, the Kenyan literary magazine set up by Binyavanga Wainaina after he won the Caine Prize the previous year. In 2004, she won the Woman of the year for her contributions to the arts in Kenya. In September 2015, her critically acclaimed book Dust was not only shortlisted for the Folio Prize, but also won Kenya's pre-eminent literary prize, the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature.

Kenyan literature describes literature which comes from Kenya. Kenya has a long oral and written literary tradition, primarily in English and Swahili, the two official languages of the country.

Frank Odoi (cartoonist)

Frank Odoi, one of Africa's foremost cartoonists, was born in the mining town of Tarkwa in Western Ghana in 1948. He was the only boy amongst seven sisters. He lost his father at an early age and was primarily raised by his mother. He was married to Monicah Asami, who later changed her name to Caroline Odoi. They had three daughters Maureen Atulo, Francesca Ajua Odoi and Francine Ashardey Odoi.

She is the author of the YA novels Let’s Talk About This, The Kigango Oracle, Hila and The Shark Attack among other works. Moraa was a 2017 apexart Fellow. Moraa was one of the Kenya Chapter winners of the 2014 Burt Award for African Literature and shortlisted for the 2010 Penguin Prize for African Writing and also won First Prize in the National Book Development Council of Kenya (NBDCK) Adult Fiction literary award in 2008

Julie Gathoni Sumira Gichuru is a Kenyan Entrepreneur and Media Personality with investments in media, fashion retail and entertainment sectors. She is an Independent Director at Acumen Communication Limited and is a Fellow and trustee of the Africa Leadership Initiative EA.

Muthoni Kirima

Muthoni wa Kirima is a retired top-ranking female fighter in the Kenya Land and Freedom Army of the Mau Mau Uprising in the 1950s. Few Mau Mau women became active fighters, and Muthoni is the only woman to have attained the Mau Mau rank of field-marshal.

Muthoni Drummer Queen


Muthoni Drummer Queen or Muthoni Ndonga is a Kenyan rapper, drummer and cultural entrepreneur. She produces alternative electro-hip-hop music and founded the festivals Africa Nouveau and Blankets & Wine in East Africa.
