Mutilator were a thrash / death metal band, formed in 1985 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. They released two full-length records through Cogumelo Records in the 1980s.

Biography

Mutilator was formed in 1985 in Belo Horizonte by vocalist/guitarist Kleber, guitarist/lyricist Alexander "Magoo", bassist Ricardo Neves and his brother Rodrigo on drums, [1] originally under the name of Desaster. [2] The band changed their name to Mutilator following the addition of Sepultura roadie [3] Silvio SDN on vocals. This line-up recorded the Bloodstorm and Grave Deseccration demos, and contributed two tracks (Believers of Hell and Nuclear Holocaust) to the Cogumelo Records' compilation Warfare Noise I in 1986.

By 1987 Silvio SDN had left the band, and the band recorded their debut album for Cogumelo, Immortal Force with Kleber on vocals. The album was recorded on a tiny budget but has proved to have some long-lasting appeal; Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic describes it as "an excellent case study in DIY ethics and the desire to succeed against all odds" and comments, "when held up against its improbable origins, many of its deficiencies can't help but be ignored, and may well explain the album's enduring appeal in the eyes of serious metal collectors". [4] Comparisons have been made between the album and the works of Sepultura, Sarcófago, Vulcano, Kreator, Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, [4] Possessed and Bathory [2] The album however had little international impact, and led only to limited national touring. Magoo however had faith in Mutilator's future potential and turned down an offer to replace Jairo T. in Sepultura (a position eventually taken by Andreas Kisser).

A second album, Into the Strange was released in 1988 with a different line-up, following the departure of the Neves siblings. Magoo took over on vocals, also penning all of the lyrics and much of the music; the record also saw the arrival of new members CM (on guitars) and drummer Armando Sampaio (ex-Holocausto). Recorded and mixed in 16 tracks at Belo Horizonte's JG Studios, the album "held the distinction of being Brazilian heavy metal's most professional domestic production yet". [5] However, the album fell well short of commercial expectations, and Mutilator split up shortly after its release.

The band returned to activities from April 2018. [3]

Their demos and first album leaned towards death metal, but evolved more towards a black metal and thrash metal style which includes elements of Celtic and folk music which the band calls "Mythological Occult Metal". It is their first official release, and originally appeared alongside Overdose's Século XX as a split album. The EP's songs were later released as bonus tracks on the CD version of Morbid Visions.

Jairo Guedes Braga, known professionally as Jairo Guedz, is a Brazilian guitarist and bassist, currently playing guitar for The Troops of Doom and The Southern Blacklist, and bass in a Metallica tribute band called Metallica Cover Brazil.

Paulo Xisto Pinto Júnior is a Brazilian musician best known as the bassist for heavy metal band Sepultura. He joined Sepultura after Roberto Raffan left the band in 1984, becoming Sepultura's second bassist. Although no original members are left in Sepultura, Pinto is the longest remaining member of Sepultura despite never performing on any album until Chaos A.D. (1993).

The following is the discography of Sepultura, a Brazilian heavy metal band. Sepultura was formed in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. After several lineup changes, Paulo Jr. and Jairo Guedz became permanent members for the band's first studio album Morbid Visions, released in 1986 through Cogumelo Records. Guitarist Jairo Guedz left Sepultura following the band's first tour and was replaced by Andreas Kisser. With the new lineup, Sepultura recorded Schizophrenia in 1987. Beneath the Remains, the first album from the band's contract with Roadrunner Records, was released in 1989, followed by Arise in 1991 and Chaos A.D. in 1993. Sepultura's best-selling album Roots, was released in 1996 and debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200.

Warfare Noise is a split heavy metal album released on Cogumelo Records in 1986. The album features four Brazilian heavy metal bands: Chakal, Mutilator, Sarcófago, and Holocausto. A follow-up album titled Warfare Noise II was also released through Cogumelo Records in 1988. The record served as the debut for Sarcófago, and their appearance on the album ultimately led to them being signed to Cogumelo - their first label. In 2006, a one-off concert featuring Sarcófago was organized by Cogumelo and bass player Geraldo Minelli in celebration of the album's 20th anniversary.
