"My Family's Slave" is a non-fiction, biographical short story by the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Alex Tizon. It was the cover story of the June 2017 issue of The Atlantic . It was Tizon's final published story and was printed after his death in March 2017. [1] He died on the day that The Atlantic's editorial staff decided the article would be featured on the magazine's front cover, before they could tell him of their decision. [2] The story went viral on the Internet and generated extensive debate, receiving both praise and criticism.
The work recounts the life story of a Filipino woman, Eudocia Tomas Pulido, known in the family as "Lola" (grandmother in Tagalog), [3] who lived with the author's family for 64 years, [4] [5] [6] for most of that time essentially as a slave, and who helped raise three generations of the author's family. [4] [7]
Pulido was a distant relation of the Tizon family, from a poorer branch of the clan. In the 1940s, she was tricked into servitude by the author's grandfather, a military officer during the Commonwealth Era, and then at the age of 18 was "given" to the author's then 12-year-old mother as a personal slave. [4] Pulido came to the United States in 1964 on a special passport linked to the author's father, who was a diplomat. However, her travel papers expired in 1969, and she was ineligible for the permanent-resident status that the author's family received, making her an illegal immigrant in the U.S for the next two decades. She eventually received amnesty as a result of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, and she became a U.S. citizen in October 1998. [4]
The Tizon family went through a tumultuous and indigent time as they moved from the Philippines to Los Angeles, to Seattle, and multiple other locations before settling in Oregon. The author's father quit his consular post, became a gambler and womanizer, and eventually abandoned the family. His mother worked long hours while studying medicine and eventually remarried. Pulido suffered continuous abuse and neglect from the author's parents, besides receiving no salary or remuneration for her services. Nonetheless, Pulido steadfastly carried out her matriarchal duties, essentially serving as a surrogate mother to the Tizon children. Eventually, the author and his siblings stood up for Pulido to their mother, though Pulido remained in servitude.
After his mother's death, Alex Tizon brought Pulido, then aged 75, to live in his home with his family. Pulido was given a salary and encouraged to stop acting as a constant servant. Tizon paid for her to visit her home village in the Philippines when she was 83, after which she chose to return to the United States. Pulido died on November 7, 2011, at the age of 86, and Tizon later repatriated her ashes to her birthplace of Mayantoc, Tarlac. [4]
"My Family's Slave" went viral and sparked significant debate in both the United States and the Philippines after being published in The Atlantic. [6] The Atlantic acknowledged these mixed reactions to the story with the article "Your Responses to ‘My Family’s Slave’" by assistant editor Rosa Inocencio Smith. [8] Filipinos generally praised Tizon, while many Western commentators criticized him. [9]
The article was lauded as "an honest, haunting tale" by the Chicago Tribune , [10] but it also received criticism. [11] [12] [13] The Washington Post noted that the article "drew wide praise, with readers commending Tizon's honesty, and some saying it was among the most powerful magazine pieces published in recent memory. But it also spurred intense criticism from some readers who felt it humanized a slave owner and others who described Tizon as being 'complicit in the systemic oppression of Filipino househelp'." [14]
The Filipino magazine Scout argued that "a lot of the international outrage is coming from a place where they don't fully understand the culture the story is set in". [5] The American magazine Slate also noted the "wide-sweeping judgment coming from people who have no context nor familiarity with Filipino culture, history, or economics". [15] Slate further wrote that, as the Philippines is a developing country, "the wide disparity between those with and without money makes the culture of servitude a viable option for many born into poverty, especially in the provinces". [15] The Washington Post wrote that many Filipinos expressed that "while they don't condone indentured servitude, Pulido's life was a much too common scenario ingrained in Filipino culture and one that must be confronted and openly discussed." [16]
Author Randy Ribay questioned the moral high ground of those who criticized Tizon through mobile devices that were built with the use of child labor, and he added that "asking why [Tizon] wasn't better at doing what was right every step of the way isn't the most fruitful line of discussion. We are all complicit in a number of evils. We all perpetuate oppression throughout our daily lives." [17]

ABC adapted the book as a television miniseries of the same name and aired it in 1977 to a record-breaking audience of 130 million viewers. In the United States, the book and miniseries raised the public awareness of black American history and inspired a broad interest in genealogy and family history.
Harriet Jacobs was an African-American abolitionist and writer whose autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, published in 1861 under the pseudonym Linda Brent, is now considered an "American classic". Born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina, she was sexually harassed by her enslaver. When he threatened to sell her children if she did not submit to his desire, she hid in a tiny crawl space under the roof of her grandmother's house, so low she could not stand up in it. After staying there for seven years, she finally managed to escape to the free North, where she was reunited with her children Joseph and Louisa Matilda and her brother John S. Jacobs. She found work as a nanny and got into contact with abolitionist and feminist reformers. Even in New York City, her freedom was in danger until her employer was able to pay off her legal owner.
Mona Simpson is an American novelist. She has written six novels and studied English at the University of California, Berkeley and Languages and Literature at Columbia University. She won a Whiting Award for her first novel, Anywhere but Here (1986). It was a popular success and adapted as a film by the same name, released in 1999. She wrote a sequel, The Lost Father (1992). Critical recognition has included the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize and making the shortlist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for her novel Off Keck Road (2000).

A whipping boy was a boy educated alongside a prince in early modern Europe, who supposedly received corporal punishment for the prince's transgressions in his presence. The prince was not punished himself because his royal status exceeded that of his tutor; seeing a friend punished would provide an equivalent motivation not to repeat the offence. An archaic proverb which captures a similar idea is "to beat a dog before a lion." Whipping was a common punishment of tutors at that time. There is little contemporary evidence for the existence of whipping boys, and evidence that some princes were indeed whipped by their tutors, although Nicholas Orme suggests that nobles might have been beaten less often than other pupils. Some historians regard whipping boys as entirely mythical; others suggest they applied only in the case of a boy king, protected by divine right, and not to mere princes.

Because Cisneros also has six brothers and her family moved frequently when she was a child, the novel is semi-autobiographical. Kalyeserye was a soap opera parody segment that was aired live on the Filipino noontime variety show Eat Bulaga! on GMA Network. The mini-show, as it had evolved, focused on AlDub, the fictional couple pairing — or "love team" as it is more commonly known in the Philippines — of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza's "Yaya Dub" character in which the two only communicate through lip-syncing to various pop songs and movie audio clips as well as written messages, and interact only on the show's split-screen frame. Richards is usually based in Broadway Centrum studio of Eat Bulaga! in Quezon City, Metro Manila while Mendoza travels around to a different external location.
The Irish slaves myth is a fringe pseudohistorical narrative that conflates the penal transportation and indentured servitude of Irish people during the 17th and 18th centuries, with the hereditary chattel slavery experienced by the forebears of the African diaspora. Some white nationalists, and others who want to minimize the effects of hereditary chattel slavery on Africans and their descendants, have used this false equivalence to deny racism against African Americans or claim that African Americans are too vocal in seeking justice for historical grievances. It also can hide the facts around Irish involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. The myth has been in circulation since at least the 1990s and has been disseminated in online memes and social media debates. According to historians Jerome S. Handler and Matthew C. Reilly, "it is misleading, if not erroneous, to apply the term 'slave' to Irish and other indentured servants in early Barbados". In 2016, academics and Irish historians wrote to condemn the myth.
