Ali Novak started writing My Life with the Walter Boys at 15, posting the manuscript chapter by chapter on Wattpad in 2010.[8] The novel quickly gained significant attention, amassing millions of reads and attracting huge fanbase. Novak attributes her writing career to Wattpad, noting that sharing her story online “changed my life” and paved the way for its print publication.[9]
Novak described her writing process as a blend of spontaneous creativity and subsequent structural refinement. Initial drafts on Wattpad were crafted more “by the seat of [her] pants,” with little detailed planning. Later, when Walter Boys was picked up by Sourcebooks Fire for print, she undertook significant revisions, refining the large ensemble cast, tightening character arcs, and improving pacing to fit a traditional novel format.[9][10]

Other critics were less favorable. A reviewer from The Pathfinder called the book “formulaic” and argued that it relied too heavily on common teen-drama tropes such as love triangles and sibling rivalry.[12]
Accolades
The book was also nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in the Young Adult Fiction category, and was included on YALSA’s Teens’ Top 10 list.[13]

In December 2023, Netflix released a television adaptation of the novel starring Nikki Rodriguez as Jackie, Noah LaLonde as Cole, and Ashby Gentry as Alex.[15] The series was renewed for a second season released in August 2025, with a third season confirmed.[16]
