My Mother and Other Strangers is a 2016 British television drama series, written by Barry Devlin, made by BBC Northern Ireland with funding from Northern Ireland Screen. [1] The story is set in a small village in Northern Ireland in 1943, during World War II.

Contents

Commissioning of the first series of five 60-minute episodes for BBC One was announced in May 2015. [2] The series began airing on the PBS network in the U.S. in June 2017, as part of PBS' Masterpiece series. [3] The set stage was in Ballycranbeg Rubane, County Down in Ballycran it was the 2nd main stage The main stage was in Kearney, County Down.

Setting

My Mother and Other Strangers is set in 1943 during the Second World War in the fictional village of Moybeg, on the shores of Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland. The series centres on the Coyne family and their neighbours, as they come to terms with the influx of thousands of American servicemen of the USAAF Eighth Air Force into their small, rural community. [2] Writer Barry Devlin, who himself grew up in the small village of Ardboe on the shores of Lough Neagh, stated that he wanted to create an "exotic love story" set in the familiar surroundings of a place he recognised. [2]

Characters and actors

The series has at its core the Coyne family, consisting of Rose Coyne (Hattie Morahan), Michael Coyne (Owen McDonnell), and the Coynes' three children: sixteen-year-old Emma (Eileen O’Higgins); Francis, ten; and Kate, seven. [1] [4]

Also central to the developing story across the five episodes is Captain Dreyfuss (Aaron Staton), a USAAF liaison officer. [1] [4]

The Coynes' neighbours, the Hanlon family, are played by Des McAleer, Seamus O'Hara and Ryan McParland. [1] [4] Charles Lawson plays the parish doctor, Dr Black. [1]

Failey (Kerr Logan) is a local eel fisherman and boyfriend to Sally Quinn (Fiona O’Shaughnessy). She and her brother Barney (Gavin Drea) work on the Coynes' farm. [1]

The River Bann is the longest river in Northern Ireland, its length, Upper and Lower Bann combined, being 129 km (80 mi). However, the total length of the River Bann, including its path through the 30 km (19 mi) long Lough Neagh is 159 km (99 mi). Another length of the River Bann given is 90 mi. The river winds its way from the southeast corner of Ulster to the northwest coast, pausing in the middle to widen into Lough Neagh. The River Bann catchment has an area of 5,775 km2. The River Bann has a mean discharge rate of 92 m3/s. According to C. Michael Hogan, the Bann River Valley is a settlement area for some of the first human arrivals in Ireland after the most recent glacial retreat.

Oxford Island is a National Nature Reserve and public recreation site on the southern shores of Lough Neagh at Lurgan, County Armagh. The site covers 282 acres and is owned and maintained by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Much of the area is designated as a National Nature Reserve due to its wide variety of natural habitats. The purpose of all work on the island is to maintain biodiversity and to provide a recreation area for everyone.
