Myshkin is an American-born singer-songwriter, touring and recording artist, composer and producer. She sings and plays acoustic and electric guitar, tenor guitar, mandolin and other instruments solo, in cooperation with other artists, and with her band.

She is known for creating evocative, eclectic & fierce contemporary folk, flavoured by almost everything: especially country blues, Americana, and Jazz. [1]

Also a multimedia artist, Myshkin's most recent work incorporates film/animation and theatrical elements. [2]

Early life

Myshkin is a native of Indiana where she was born to parents recently immigrated from the Netherlands. After studying theater in college she moved to New Mexico, and then spent some time traveling the U.S. before settling in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1993.

Career

In New Orleans Myshkin recorded five albums of her own work, and appeared on many others. She was a member of The Road Dog Diva's, Ez Bake Organs, and the Mike West Band. Session work included vocals and instrumentation on Shawn Mullins' platinum album Soul's Core. [3] Myshkin and Mike West toured as a duo for a decade, playing approximately 300 shows a year throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia, and were central players in the city's acoustic/folk music resurgence of the 1990s. [4]

Integrating far flung influences and an earthy poetry to tell her stories, Myshkin was honing her style, a literate roots music with a contemporary edge. [5] In 2001 Myshkin formed a new band, Myshkin's Ruby Warblers, with John Lutz on upright bass and Scott Magee on drums. The first record, Rosebud Bullets, was a musical leap forward, a well received farewell to New Orleans that incorporated chanteuse, gypsy/jazz and rock elements, and attracted national critical attention. Myshkin moved to Portland, Oregon in 2002, [7] followed by drummer Magee a year later. In Portland she began working with the electronic musician / producer Sailor Banks, with whom she released two albums Corvidae and Sigh Semaphore, adding electronic elements, and concentrating on political and humanist themes. [8]

Myshkin's Ruby Warblers continued to tour the US and Europe until 2008, when Myshkin left the city to co-found a permaculture community in Southern Oregon.There she built an earth walled studio, in which she recorded the dreamy lush and eloquent record That Diamond Lust released in 2012. [9]

In 2013, Myshkin met her future wife while on tour, and moved to Joshua Tree, California to join her. She began performing under the name Myshkin Warbler, typically with a five piece band, including Damian Lester on upright bass and Jenny Qaqundah on cello . In 2016, she created Myshkin Warbler's Royal Rabble Circus, which quickly became a staple of the twice-annual Joshua Tree Music Festival. [10]

In June 2018, DoubleSalt Works released the record Trust and the High Wire, Myshkin Warbler's record about her wife's near death experience and recovery. The record serves as a musical companion to Jenny Q's experimental book, Held Together. The couple combined the two works into a performance piece, which first toured in summer 2018 as Trust.Together. [11]

In 2022 Myshkin was granted a Global Talent Visa to live and work in the UK. Myshkin and her family currently reside in the highlands of Scotland. In 2024, Myshkin and Jenny re-created the Trust Together show as Held on the High Wire, adding a new script, new song arrangements, and film projections, and began touring it throughout Scotland with support from several Scottish arts organisations. Lone Star State of Mind is the fifth studio album released by American musician Nanci Griffith, and her first album for MCA Records. With the album, Griffith's music took a turn from her original folk music base into more commercially viable country music. For this album, she enlisted the talents of veteran country producer Tony Brown. The album garnered her first appearance on the Billboard Country charts, rising to No. 23 on the Country Albums chart, and was her highest-charting album on the chart. It was also a massive success in the United Kingdom, where it topped the country albums chart and spent over a year in the top 20. The title track, "Lone Star State of Mind," became the first of only three Griffith singles to enter the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
