The NS Plan U, officially the DE-3, was a 3-car Diesel multiple unit designed for service under the Nederlandse Spoorwegen. [1]
The cab's nose was used as a basis for the Mat '64 EMU, which operated under the same company until 2016.
The trains were built between 1960 and 1963 by Werkspoor in Utrecht. They entered service under the 1xx classification, being numbered between 111 and 152. It had a more modern nose compared to the previously-built Mat '54. Originally, the plan was to give the sets the same nose as the RAm / DE-4, also built by Werkspoor. The problem was, due to the angular nose shape of said TEE sets, the rain kept hitting the windows during heavy rainfall, which caused a lot of inconvenience for the driver, which was why the DE-3s have their nose type, which was used on the Mat' 64. Other innovations compared to the older NS stock were the light construction, the central door locking by the conductor and a public address system. The trains were painted red, the new color for diesel trains introduced around 1960, which earned them the nickname "Red Devils". On trainsets 148-142, five blinds have been placed in the side wall of the engine room instead of three, and there's only 1 porthole.
From 1968, they were painted in Nederlandse Spoorwegen's Yellow & Bluestripe colors. The engine compartment got 2 stripes instead of the normal 3. In 1972, the sliding doors were replaced by swinging doors that had been introduced and successfully tested on the Mat '64. Only the sliding door in the luggage compartment was retained.
In June 2000, it was decided to give 19 trains a lifespan extension. The trains would be equipped with air conditioning in the cabin, new upholstery for the seats and even a new diesel engine. The trains would be used on electrified track sections and could thus compensate for the resulting shortage of rolling stock. Five trains were also fitted with ATB New Generation. This allowed the NS to also use the trains on diesel track sections where this protection was applicable. The numbers of the new trains were 191 to 195 (ex 137, 135, 122, 130 and 141 respectively).
In total, 15 trains were overhauled. The trains can be recognized by a large black box on the cabin of the engine compartment. This box contains the cooling of a new generator for energy supply. The latter is placed in the luggage compartment, which is no longer accessible to passengers.
In 2001, almost all diesel lines had been taken over by other carriers or the new DM'90 was deployed by NS. In addition, almost all diesel lines were now equipped with ATB-NG. The last service for unconverted trains was therefore the local train service between Hengelo and Oldenzaal. In July of that year, that route was also equipped with ATB-NG and the service was taken over by DM'90 and the last unconverted trains were taken out of service.
The first overhauled trainsets were deployed in April 2002, on the 9100 series train numbers (local train Zwolle – Groningen). In December of that year, the 6400 series trains (local train Weert – Eindhoven) followed. The trainsets also appeared occasionally between Zwolle and Kampen when the DM'90 was defective. More than a year and a half later, in December 2003, the last sets were retired.
Plan U trainsets consisted of a motor and 2 trailer cars, as shown below.

Four Plan U trainsets have been preserved as museum material, which were 114, 115, 121 and 151. 114 is included in the collection of the Dutch Railroad Museum in Utrecht. 113 & 115 were donated to the Haarlem IJmuidense Spoorweg Maatschappij (which is going to be referred to as the HIJSM from now on) in Haarlem. Both were restored to operating condition and are now in the "Red Devil" scheme. In 2007, 121 joined them. The black box on the cabin of the motor car was still clearly recognizable. Unfortunately, all 3 were broken into and had their insides partially destroyed on the night of February 21-22, 2009. But since the damage, despite costing several hundred-thousand euros, was small, they were partially restored to operating conditions.
114 was restored in 2009 and returned to the Dutch Railroad Museum in 2010. It's now used for excursion trips.
The total preservation list going up in numbers are 113, 114, 115, 121, and 151.
Illinois Central 121 was a diesel streamliner built in 1936 by Pullman-Standard and powered by Electro-Motive Corporation, which was used by the Illinois Central Railroad on the Green Diamond. Its fixed five-car consist was also the end of an era; the popularity of the early streamliners was their undoing, because the trains could not be lengthened or shortened to handle varying loads. It was the last streamliner built with the power car articulated with the train; future streamliners featured a matched but separable locomotive. The train was painted in a two-tone green livery, "Cypress Green" on the nose and below the window sills with "Cedar Green" above, separated by an aluminum strip. Extensive aluminum trim was applied.
The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Class 200 diesel locomotives were built for shunting duties. 169 of these small locomotives, numbered 201–369, were built by Werkspoor from 1934–1951. They were known as "Sik" by rail enthusiasts and "locomotor" by railway staff. Fifteen of these locomotives were rebuilt with a retractable crane. The few locomotives in active service were retired in 2008 after new Dutch personnel safety regulations prevented NS from using them any longer. Most were no longer active at that time.
The NS Class 6400 is a type of Bo-Bo diesel-electric freight locomotive. 120 were built by MaK and ABB between 1988 and 1994 for Nederlandse Spoorwegen.
The ICE 1 is the first batch-produced German high-speed train and one of six in the Intercity Express family. Revenue service at speeds up to 250 km/h (155 mph) started in 1991. It was raised to 280 km/h (175 mph) in May 1995 and temporary reduced to 250 km/h (155 mph) again, as a result of the Eschede accident.
A control car, cab car, control trailer, or driving trailer is a non-powered rail vehicle from which a train can be operated. As dedicated vehicles or regular passenger cars, they have one or two driver compartments with all the controls and gauges required to remotely operate the locomotive, including exterior locomotive equipment such as horns, bells, ploughs, and lights. They also have communications and safety systems such as GSM-R or European Train Control System (ETCS). Control cars enable push-pull operation when located on the end of a train opposite its locomotive by allowing the train to reverse direction at a terminus without moving the locomotive or turning the train around.
The Blue Angel was the name given to the Plan X class DE-1 and DE-2 diesel railcars formerly used by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. There have been rumours that the name has a connection to the German movie Der blaue Engel, but this has never been confirmed.
Class 624 and class 634 are types of diesel multiple unit, originally operated by Deutsche Bahn.
The NS Class 3400, referred to as DM'90, was a series of diesel multiple unit which were in service in the Netherlands between 1996 and 2017 and were built by Duewag, Talbot and SIG between 1996 and 1998. They were operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and between 1999 until 2014 under lease by Syntus. DM'90, their classification, means diesel rolling stock of the 1990s or Buffel, which means Buffalo. The DM'90 series was developed alongside the short lived electric counter part, the SM'90 series with which it shares the unusual body cross section. The Class 3400 were the last DMUs in service with NS, the older DE3 "Plan U" and DH1/2 "Wadloper" series having been replaced by the diesel electric Stadler GTW which are still in use with other operators in the Netherlands. Since January 2018, all units are now stored out of service and 32 units have been sold to the SKPL - Poland's private railway operator, where they have been reclassified to SD85.
The NS Mat '64 or Materieel '64 were electric multiple units (EMU) built by Werkspoor and later by Duewag and Waggonfabrik Talbot between 1961 and 1976. They were operated in the Netherlands by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) until 2016. The equipment consisted of independent four and two-car train sets called Plan T and Plan V: the Plan T is a 4-car EMU, and the Plan V is a 2-car EMU. Materieel '64 is sometimes nicknamed 'Apekoppen' and 'Standaard Stoptrein' due to their distinct shape.
The Sprinter Lighttrain or SLT is an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train type operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen in the Netherlands. They were built from 2007 to 2012 by Bombardier (2400) and Siemens (2600). It is the successor of the Sprinter SGM train type.
The Intercity Materieel or ICM is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen in the Netherlands. The train received the nickname Koploper, because it had a so-called "walk through head". After these trains were modernized, the "walk through heads" were removed. The modernized train sets are referred to as Intercity Materieel Modern (ICMm).
Werkspoor N.V. was the shortened, and later the official name of the Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel. It was a Dutch machine factory, known for rolling stock, (ship) steam engines, and diesel engines. It was a successor of the company Van Vlissingen en Dudok van Heel, later named Koninklijke Fabriek van Stoom- en andere Werktuigen. In 1954 Werkspoor was merged with Stork.
The CAF Civity is a family of regional passenger trains which is manufactured by Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles. Available as both diesel, electric and battery-electric multiple unit, the Civity was first launched in 2010 and received its first order two years later.
The SBB RAm TEE I and NS DE4 were a class of five 4-car diesel-electric trainsets ordered for Trans Europe Express (TEE) service. Two were ordered by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and three by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS)
The Sprinter New Generation (SNG) is an electrically driven type of trainset of the Dutch Railways or Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The trains are designed and built by the Spanish train builder Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), who bases the trains on the Civity platform. The trains are primarily intended to replace older train equipment, but are also intended for the growth of the number of passengers on the Hoofdrailnet or main rail network.
The NS Mat '54 or Materieel '54 was an electric multiple unit train, used by the Dutch State-owned railways from 1956 until 1996. The typical nose of the train was designed for extra safety for the train driver. The public gave the train a nickname: Doghead (Hondekop).
The NS 3700 class was a class of express steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement of 2'C (4-6-0) of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) and its predecessor Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS).
The Mat '24 was a series of electric "locomotives" of the Dutch Railways. After the arrival of electric streamline units in 1935, the name of this equipment became Blokkendozen, after the angular model. Some NS employees and those interested in the railway invariably spoke of "(electric) buffer equipment", to distinguish it from the streamlined, bufferless electric multiple units of the types Mat '35, Mat '36 and Mat '40.
The NS 7700 was a series of tank engines of the Dutch Railways (NS) and its predecessor the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM).
