The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee and is open to anyone with a minimum level of disability who can extend their arms within 20° of full extension during a lift. Powerlifting has been competed at the Summer Paralympics since 1984.

Lyudmyla Viktorivna Kichenok is a Ukrainian professional tennis player. She has a career-high WTA doubles ranking of world No. 5, reached on 9 September 2024. She won the 2024 US Open with Jeļena Ostapenko becoming the first Ukrainian to do so, and the 2023 Wimbledon Championships in mixed doubles with Mate Pavić. Kichenok has won ten additional doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including four with her twin sister, Nadiia. On 21 July 2014, she reached a her career-high singles rankings of No. 156.

Nadiia Viktorivna Kichenok is a Ukrainian professional tennis player. On 31 January 2022, she reached a career-high of No. 29 in the WTA doubles rankings. Kichenok has won nine doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including four with her twin sister Lyudmyla. She has also won four singles titles and 24 doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit. On 6 January 2014, she also reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 100.

Ukraine made its Paralympic Games début at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, with thirty athletes competing in archery, track and field, powerlifting, swimming, and sitting volleyball. Vasyl Lishchynskyy won Ukraine's first Paralympic gold medal, in the shot put, and Ukrainians also won four silver medals and two bronze. Ukrainians had previously participated within the Soviet Union's delegation in 1988, and as part of the Unified Team in 1992. Ukraine, following its independence from the Soviet Union, missed out on the 1994 Winter Games, but made its Winter Paralympics début at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano. Ukraine has competed at every edition of the Summer and Winter Games since then and have done so with remarkable success.
