Kitale is a town in the north west of Kenya, in the old Rift Valley province. It situated between Mount Elgon and the Cherangany Hills. The town has an elevation of around 1,900 metres (6,200 ft). Its population was 162,174 as of 2019. Kitale town is the headquarter of the Trans-Nzoia County, which is also sometimes generally referred to by the name of the town. The name Kariobangi is believed to have come from an English phrase "Carry your bags" that was used by a white settler during the colonial period, that African natives mispronounced. It is split into two parts, Kariobangi North and Kariobangi South. The northern part was constructed first, with first buildings built in 1961. Kariobangi North is part of the Embakasi North electoral constituency. Kariobangi South is in the Embakasi West constituency. This SGR runs parallel to the narrow-gauge Uganda Railway that was completed in 1901 under British colonial rule. The East African Railway Master Plan provides for the Mombasa–Nairobi SGR to link with other SGRs being built in the East African Community.

The road allows traffic from Mombasa, destined for the central parts of Kenya to bypass downtown Nairobi, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the city's central business district.

The Outer Ring Road is a 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) multi-lane highway located in Nairobi, Kenya. Construction funding was initially provided by the African Development Bank in 2013, although construction delays and increased traffic have delayed completion of the project. The highway runs primarily along the Eastlands area of Nairobi and connects major transportation hubs including the Nairobi-Thika Highway, Mombasa Road, and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
