Naomi Clark is a Japanese American game designer, [1] writer, and professor who currently serves as the departmental chair of NYU Game Center at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. During Clark's term as chair of the department, NYU Game Center has been ranked by The Princeton Review as the top school for game design. [2] Her games often address LGBTQ themes. She designed Consentacle, a science fiction cooperative board game, which raised $154,609 on Kickstarter and won the IndieCade Impact Award. [1] [3] [4] Clark co-wrote the book A Game Design Vocabulary with Anna Anthropy. [5] Clark is a member of New York City's Game Development Industry Council. [6]

Career

Clark began developing games for a living in 1999. As of 2018, she has worked on over thirty-five released games for various companies, including Lego. [7] [8] Clark became a full-time faculty member of NYU Game Center in 2015, after teaching courses at New York Film Academy, Parsons, and the School of Visual Arts. [7]

In addition to Consentacle, Clark has written multiple games that explore queerness, gender, and sexuality. Clark was a co-developer of Sissyfight 2000 in the 1990s and helped relaunch it as an open source game through a Kickstarter campaign in 2013. [9] [10] Leigh Alexander for Game Developer (website) writes that "New York-based veteran developer Naomi Clark is fundamentally a brilliant designer first, a sexual politician second." [11] Clark appeared in the 2014 documentary film Gaming in Color by MidBoss about queer people in gaming. [12] [13] [14] In 2015, Clark developed Lacerunner, an eighteenth-century reimagining of Netrunner. [15] Clark was interviewed for Polygon about how interactive fiction games on Twine help generate empathy for LGBTQ experiences. [16] Clark wrote the essay “What is Queerness in Games, Anyway?” in the 2017 anthology Queer Game Studies. [17] She wrote the foreword of Honey & Hot Wax, an anthology of sexuality-themed live action role-playing games edited by Sharang Biswas and Lucian Kahn. [18]

Keith Stuart for The Guardian named Clark and Anthropy's book A Game Design Vocabulary as one of twenty books every player should read, writing that, "this excellent manual gives you an entire framework and language for thinking about how games are constructed." [5]

Clark focuses on the significance of games in society. In a 2022 interview with Axios, she said that "play and games, even when we think of them as escapism, gain part of their power and meaning from the roots they have in the rest of society and culture.” [19] She has been a member of New York City's Game Development Industry Council since its inception in 2022. Sissyfight 2000 is a turn-based strategy online game developed by the Word online magazine staff, including executive producer Marisa Bowe, producer Naomi Clark, lead programmer Ranjit Bhatnagar, and art director Yoshi Sodeoka, with game designer Eric Zimmerman. The original Shockwave version launched in 2000 but went offline in early 2009. A successful crowdfunding campaign was launched in early 2013 on Kickstarter by some members of the original development team, who announced the re-release of the game as open-source in HTML5. The original date for the game's relaunch was September 2013, but was delayed. An open beta test, started on 30 July 2014, is currently underway.

Eric Zimmerman is an American game designer and the co-founder and CEO of Gamelab, a computer game development company based in Manhattan. GameLab is known for the game Diner Dash. Each year Zimmerman hosts the Game Design Challenge at the Game Developers Conference. He is also the co-author of four books including Rules of Play with Katie Salen, which was published in November 2004. Eric Zimmerman has written at least 24 essays and whitepapers since 1996, mostly pertaining to game development from an academic standpoint. He's currently a founding faculty at the NYU Game Center.

Queers in love at the End of the World, also stylized as queers in love at the end of the world, is a hypertext game created with Twine. Developed by Anna Anthropy in 2013 for the Ludum Dare Game Jam, the short, ten-second narrative faces players with how to interact with their partner before "(e)verything is wiped away".

Magpie Games is an American tabletop role-playing games publishing company. Their 2021 crowdfunding campaign to fund the publication of Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game raised over five million dollars, breaking the record for Kickstarter's highest earning tabletop role-playing game. Other notable publications include Bluebeard's Bride and a role-playing game adaptation of the board game Root. <i>Honey & Hot Wax</i> Anthology of role-playing games

Honey & Hot Wax is an anthology of live action role-playing games on the theme of sex and sexuality, published by Pelgrane Press in 2020. It includes games by Sharang Biswas (co-editor), Yeonsoo Julian Kim, Julia Bond Ellingboe, Kat Jones, Lucian Kahn (co-editor), Jonaya Kemper, Will Morningstar, Alex Roberts, and Susanne. It also has a foreword by Naomi Clark, academic chair of NYU Game Center and designer of the board game Consentacle, as well as a chapter on consent by Maury Brown.

Consentacle is a science fiction cooperative board game about negotiating consensual sex between two femme characters: a human astronaut and a tentacled alien. It was designed by Naomi Clark and illustrated by James Harvey. Consentacle was published in 2018 after a successful Kickstarter campaign raised $154,609. The prototype for Consentacle won the Impact Award at IndieCade 2015.

Sharang Biswas is an Indian American designer/writer of tabletop role-playing games and interactive media, a writer of speculative fiction, an adjunct professor of game studies at NYU Game Center, and a freelance games journalist. His work focuses on LGBTQ and science fiction and fantasy themes. Biswas has won multiple awards for his game writing work as both a solo designer and a collaborator: one IndieCade award, four ENNIE Awards, and two Indie Game Developer Network awards. He was an Artist in Residence at the Museum of the Moving Image.
