The National Book Council (Maltese : Il-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb), is a Maltese public entity dedicated to the promotion of the book industry in Malta. [1]

It organises the Malta Book Festival (Maltese : Il-Festival Nazzjonali Tal-Ktieb), The Literary Contest of Novels for Youth (Maltese: Konkors ta' Kitba Letteratura għaż-Żgħażagħ) [2] and other national and regional events, workshops, seminars and contests. It also confers the National Book Prize (Maltese : Premju Nazzjonali Tal-Ktieb), administers Public Lending Rights, and is Malta's registration agent for ISBN and ISMN. [3] [4]

National Book Prize

In 1971, the Literary Prize for books in Maltese was set up with the aim to encourage Maltese literature. Notable authors who were awarded this Prize include Anton Buttigieg, Francis Ebejer, Oliver Friggieri, Joe Friggieri, and Trevor Zahra. The organization of the Prize was passed to the National Book Council upon its formation in 2001. There are nowadays several categories within the Prize, including novels, short stories, poetry, translation, nonfiction, and research. Notable winners since 2001 include Trevor Zahra, Guido Lanfranco, Giovanni Bonello, Joe Friggieri, and Albert Ganado. [5]

He led the establishment of literary history and criticism in Maltese while teaching at the University of Malta, studying the works of Dun Karm, Rużar Briffa, and others. A prolific writer himself, Friggieri explored new genres to advocate the Maltese language, writing the libretti for the first oratorio and the first cantata in Maltese. His work aimed to promote the Maltese cultural identity, while not shying from criticism: one of his most famous novels, Fil-Parlament Ma Jikbrux Fjuri, attacked the tribalistic divisions of society caused by politics. From philosophy, he was mostly interested in epistemology and existentialism.

The Maltese Bestiary: An illustrated guide to the mythical flora and fauna of the Maltese Islands is a 2014 compendium of legendary beasts from Maltese folklore. It showcases "supernatural entities, frightening creatures, magical plants, ancient gods and a host of other legendary beings" all from the islands of Malta and Gozo. Stephan D. Mifsud is both the author and the illustrator of the book.

Lou Drofenik is a Maltese-Australian novelist and academic. She lives in Victoria, Australia.

Albert Ganado MOM is a Maltese lawyer and historian. He is a past president of the Malta Historical Society and the founder and president of the Malta Map Society. He released his memoirs in 2020. This debut novel won the 2020 edition of The Literary Contest of Novels for Youth organised by the Malta National Book Council and Aġenzija Żagħżagħ. The novel novel become an instant success and was one of the hits during the Malta Book Festival 2021.

The National Book Prize represents the foremost literary accolade bestowed upon authors, editors, translators, publishers, and illustrators for their outstanding contributions to literature in Malta within the past year. Recognising excellence across diverse categories of the National Book Prize and the Terramaxka Prize for children and young adults, titles undergo a meticulous shortlisting and awarding process. An impartial adjudication board oversees the evaluation, upholding the values of transparency and fairness at the highest level.
