The National Center for Technology Innovation (NCTI) was established in the United States to advance learning opportunities for all students, with a special focus on individuals with disabilities. NCTI is funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the U.S. Department of Education and located at the American Institutes for Research (AIR).

The NCTI Web site includes pages listing articles about collaboration, innovators, events and funding opportunities involving accessibility, assistive technology, and universal design [1] It also publishes an online directory, the NCTI Yellow Pages, containing project descriptions and contact details for developers, publishers, technical assistance providers, and vendors associated with over 700 special education technology projects. Additionally, it publishes a bimonthly electronic newsletter, QuickClicks, which features news articles, reports, and information on funding opportunities.

NCTI hosts national forums designed for innovators, public and private funders, venture capitalists, policymakers, vendors, researchers, and media to discuss challenges and solutions in the field. The 2007 conference is featured in a video. [2] NCTI will be hosting another national forum in 2008.

NCTI also co-produced the TechMatrix, a free, searchable database of 250 assistive and learning software and products and related research for students with special needs. [3]

The Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning (CCNMTL) was established on March 1, 1999 under the Provost Office at Columbia University. The mission of the Center was to enhance teaching and learning through the purposeful use of technology and new media. CCNMTL staff worked closely with faculty partners to provide support ranging from the construction of course websites to the development of elaborate custom-made projects. CCNMTL used the design research methodology, an iterative cycle of discovery, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. CCNMTL was part of Columbia's Information Services Division, which included the Columbia University Library System.

Agora Center

The Agora Center is a separate institute at the University of Jyväskylä in Central Finland. By its nature, the Agora Center is interdisciplinary and networked. Its purpose is to conduct, coordinate, and administrate top-level research and development that relates to the knowledge society and which places emphasis on the human perspective. The research and development is conducted in the form of fixed-period projects in cooperation with the University of Jyväskylä’s other faculties and separate institutes, businesses, the public sector and other relevant parties. Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society

The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS) is a research institute operated by the University of California to facilitate the real-world application of technological research. Approved in 2000, it is part of the Governor Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation, along with the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, and the California Nanosystems Institute. Headquartered at UC Berkeley, CITRIS was founded in 2001 from a desire to see innovative technologies put to practical use in improving quality of life for people.

The DO-IT Center is based at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1992, DO-IT’s mission is to increase the successful participation of people with disabilities in postsecondary education and careers, in STEM fields and careers, and in computing fields and careers throughout the U.S. It directs the national AccessSTEM program, and co-directs the national AccessComputing Alliance focused on engaging people with disabilities in computing fields.

The Jernigan Institute is a research and training institute developed and run by the blind. Named after Dr.Kenneth Jernigan, it was the first of its kind. It was established in Baltimore in January 2004. The goal of the institute is to change attitudes about blindness and support the independence of blind individuals.

International Society for Technology in Education Nonprofit organization

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is a nonprofit organization that serves educators interested in the use of technology in education. ISTE provides educational technology resources to support professional learning for educators and education leaders, including the ISTE Conference & Expo—an ed tech event, and the ISTE Standards for learning, teaching and leading with technology. ISTE also provides a suite of professional learning resources to members, including webinars, online courses, consulting services, books, and peer-reviewed journals and publications.
